and how many teachers. Today i took ds1 into class as he really didnt want to go. I could only see the teacher and not the classroom assisstant even though there are 30 children in the class. All the kids were struggling to put their things away etc some were crying to their mummies the door was wide open so children could easily of walked out without the teacher noticing.

There just didnt seem enough staff to settle the children. I ended up sneaking out whilst ds didnt notice as there was no one to take him from me i could then hear him calling me. I stood outside of his view to make sure he didnt run out.It just didnt seem safe. I know this isnt the teachers fault. But there just didnt seem like there was anyone there to deal with any of the upset children or the ones who were struggling whilst the teacher conducted the class. Cant wait for ds2 to start pre-school so i can volunteer there.

Well you all seem to have it so much better than we do. I'm at a teacher + F/T TA even!

My dd's class is 30 kids, there's 1 other yr.1 class of 30 too! They have 1 teacher each and 1 shared p/t TA who is shared between the two classes!!! I have had a moan to the head as she doesn't help with the upset or unsettled kids in the mornings and just sits there. The head told me she is employed from 9am only, so doesn't have to help at drop off morning time. WTF?!? Why not employ her for the extra 15 mins and help us sooo much! Also the TA's own son is in the other yr.1 class so she spends the majority of her time there.

There are 2 classes of 30 in Reception at the infants - 1 teacher per class and a TA (plus a few "spare" ones that seem to go whereever needed?).

Although last year DS2 came home and said to me "there's 31 children in our class".........oh yes I thought - that's naughty - only supposed to have 30.

I did mention it to his teacher (in a lighthearted - how did you manage to get away with that sort of way I hasten to add) and she wasn't sure how it had happened either.

ds2 in reception

I think theres 10 but listing them I can only think of 9

One teacher one ta

asdx2 · 18/09/2009 16:14

In dd's class 12 children 1 teacher, 1 f/t TA, 2 LSA's and various students and parent helpers. When there are viruses doing the rounds it's not unusual for adults to outnumber pupils.

We are clearly very lucky in our schoo. We had 2 classes of 20ish children with 1 teaching asst per class most of the time. Think its because school has capacity of 45 per year. Once they go to year 1 it goes up to 30.

thecloudhopper · 18/09/2009 18:50

In Wales the guideline for reception is 1-8 so in a class of 24 there would be 1 adult and 2 full time supports. This funding has been allocated and ensures the ratio. In year 1 and 2 it should be 1-15

Sagacious · 18/09/2009 18:55

30

1 teacher
1 ta (but this is a allocated ta for a child with SN)

VulpusinaWilfsuit · 18/09/2009 18:58

I think it is 29 with 1 teacher, 1 TA and I think a parent helper or two. I think one of the attached nursery staff has been helping out at start of term also but not sure how long that is for...

KaDeWeh - DD1 came home with a "Student of the week" badge today - she's 7!

The Reception classes at our school both have 30 children - plus another 3 in the KS1 Language Unit. There is one teacher and one TA in DD2's class - same in the other class as far as I know.

mrz · 18/09/2009 19:36

The legal limit in England is 1 teacher to 30 children.

debbiewebweb · 18/09/2009 20:26

29 in dd's reception class, 1 teacher and 1 ta. There were 31 in my older dd's reception class so I guess we're lucky this year

littlebrownmouse · 19/09/2009 16:46

32 kids (I know, I know, the LA made a mistake)
One teacher, one early years practitioner (v. experienced nursery nurse), a TA and various other adults - other TAs, work experience students etc.

Tis very calm and quiet, no scenes in a morning, teacher on the door into the playground, Early years practitioner on door into school corridor. DD has larger staff ratio than she had at nursery most of the time despite the large class. Am very pleased and happy with whole situation. Its not the number of children in my opinion, but how resources are employed and then managed to ensure the best for them.

1 teacher, usually 2 x TAs

The first few weeks are carnage - it does settle donn honest

ICANDOTHAT · 19/09/2009 17:24

Funding, money, dosh .... and not enough of it. Welcome to your child's education

Millimat · 20/09/2009 20:11

The legal 1 teacher:30 children varies on where the school is. If the school is oversubscribed but in a 'leafy' area, the school gets very little in terms of additional funding despitre huge classes. My school has 7 classes of 30 (1 has 31) with 1 teacher each and 3 TAs to share!

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 22/09/2009 21:08

my dd started y1 this month and there are 30 per year with one teacher and two TA

There are 24 boys in her class though so its bedlam

FanjolinaJolie · 22/09/2009 22:07

We were lucky enough to get dd into a small village school so there are 14 in reception, 1 teacher and 1 TA. I know we are v lucky and appreciate it.
