What has your child learned in their first week of reception?

My dd2 says she has learned 100 letters of the alphabet, and she now knows more letters than her big sister (who's in yr 2).

She has also learned that hippos live in forests.

Dd has made a model, a box with a coffee jar lid stuck on it. It is, of course, a dinosaur. Silly mummy for not knowing what dinosaurs look like

poorbuthappy · 11/09/2009 22:05

That the little girl next door but 1 is lovely and she has played with her every day even though they didn't go to the same pre-school nursery...thank god I had the foresight to invite her to the birthday party next week...

Oh and the days really are better when you don't fall over and have lots of plasters on your knees...honestly we were running out of unbroken skin...

CarGirl · 11/09/2009 22:08

eek dd4 still not started reception yet, she is so far behind already! Starts on 21st Sep!

Lilyloo · 11/09/2009 22:10

No idea dd won't tell me takes all my time to find out what she has had for lunch

snickersnack · 11/09/2009 22:30

dd has learned a new song. She claims. It sounds to me suspiciously similar (tune, lyrics) to Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, but she swears it's different.

And she learned that "peas aren't scary". I wasn't aware she thought they were prior to this week.

katiestar · 12/09/2009 10:58

They have been assessed on recognising numbers and counting out tokens 1-10.They have been assessed on what letter sounds they know.
They have learned to wrire 'a' and 's' in the weird kind of cursive script they do where each letter starts and ends on the line (DD is really frustrated because she can't write it that way) and she has brought home a very easy reading book (the sand , the sea , the shells etc)
She has learned about Noahs ark
She has learned 'catch it bin it kill it' but doesn't know what it is she she should be catching ,killing and binning.Could be interesting ! Oh and she has been throwing and catching bean bags in PE

My ds has done four days at school now and has learnt the following :

How to start an apple off, and eat it with the skin on (he did ask for it to be peeled and sliced but got a short answer !)

That boys and girls wee in different toilets

That custard is delicious but the rest of school dinners are not, he wept for a packed lunch on Thursday night so he's got one (that'll be another five minutes I need to find in the morning)

His mission for this next week is to find out if the person who patrols the lunch hall is a "lady or a man because I don't know mummy, they do look quite scary "

I don't think they've really done anything proper yet, but I think the aim of the game is to settle them in and let them make a few friends. He's quite bright, but I'm happy to know he can walk in through the door and stick his velcro gingerbread man on his name and leave my side without weeping uncontrollably, the latin and double physics can wait until next week

DD's learnt how to play 'stuck in the mud'

lupo · 13/09/2009 14:58

ds has learnt how to sound out 8 different letters, and learnt ten new words..he did this in class but we need to practise daily at home with them ..he has also bought home a libary book which we have managed some of..

more homework to come and I am knackered ... we are getting a into a rountine with it.

BUT i am happy he is learning alot as I am paying alot for him to do so ...

Just need to ensure the learning stays fun so he does not get bogged down in it

underpaidandoverworked · 13/09/2009 19:50

We have started redecorating the living room with the drawings ds has brought home

zippy539 · 13/09/2009 19:55

Earlyriser - it's basically P1.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 13/09/2009 20:01

I love this thread.

I have no idea what ds2 has learnt but he has written his name.

foxinsocks · 13/09/2009 20:02

oh armadillo, I love love love the learning to sit cross legged and it being difficult. I read this thread at work and that actually bought a tear to my eye .

I remember both ds and dd being particularly pleased when they had mastered cross legged sitting.

foxinsocks · 13/09/2009 20:03

or even brought a tear grr at spelling

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 13/09/2009 20:20

DD2 has learned to open her eyes and sit up again after saying 'amen'.

katiestar · 14/09/2009 10:46

Saw the numeracy worksheet for today.they have a column of boxes with numbers in and then at one side of each box they had to write a number that was less than ,and at the other side a number that was more than.
Not sure if my DD can mansge that

I wasn't very impressed that also in full view on the table where their names are they had a list of how each child had done in friday's numeracy activity.

thegrammerpolicesic · 15/09/2009 10:00

katie - is she at a pre-prep as that sounds quite full on for a state primary?

Builde · 15/09/2009 14:42

Well done to all those whose children can find their peg.

My dd was still dropping her coat on the floor at the end of reception!

However, she'd learned to read. I will have to accept that we will be a household full of books but with clothes on the floor.

SparklyPrincess · 17/09/2009 12:54

My dd will reach the end of her first week in reception on Friday. If she can stay awake that long anyway!

She's mostly learnt that she'd rather stay at home with me.

She doesn't like learning, apparently. They keep making her count too many things and she says she 'can't count up to everything!' She's actually pretty good at counting (IMO!) and is constantly nagging her little sister to count stuff.

She doesn't like sitting cross-legged. She doesn't like sitting in a circle. She doesn't like standing in a circle. She doesn't like having to wait in a 'lime' () and not be allowed to walk. She doesn't like school dinners ... although she did say that had cake and peas on Tuesday, which is a bit strange!

And apparently they have no fun toys.

Strangely, when I spoke to the Headteacher as I'm worried about her (she's upset a lot, can you tell?!) - he'd been watching her running around playing some complicated game about sharks - when asked about this she started laughing and telling us all about the shark game.

I reckon I might get some sense out of her one day ...

thegrammerpolicesic · 17/09/2009 16:19

That he doesn't like the handdriers in the loos.

The he does like his teacher very much.

That he likes school (so far)

Nothing academic but they did have him doing some sort of number recognition thing which seems like part of the baseline assessment.

fruitful · 18/09/2009 22:29

Ds1 has learnt that his intended plan of "not going to do poos at school Mummy" doesn't work and that he would, after all, like to learn how to wipe his own bottom.

AllyOodle · 19/09/2009 00:08

Ahh bless them all!
My dd started on Monday (mornings only) and has learnt:

  • where to put her lunch box
  • where to put her water bottle (in the box marked Red Group)
  • where to put her coat
She can't manage the book bag yet, that is left for the attending parent. (How many items of luggage do they need?! Thinking of sticking it all in a rucksack....) She came home with a sheet headed Assessment, with a box headed Self Portrait and another for Writing Name. She had scribbled all over it using four pens at once (or perhaps I mean "drawn original artwork" I'm glad she's independent-minded and doesn't conform...but will spend the weekend teaching her to draw a picture of herself and write her name....I asked about friends but all I got was "Maya is a loud girl...She talks a lot." At playtime she heads off to something called "the field" with the biggest, toughest-looking kids she can find (she does the same before school). She ran off from the teacher on Thu and I was asked to have a word, but today she was fine, and got a sticker for being good. As we left she turned to look at her teacher, and shouted, "Farewell, Miss B!" (Could that be too much Rupert Bear?!) Is anyone else exhausted?
