How many parents will start kids in Parkour/Free running

Examples

This is advanced

and martial arts lessons early in prep for dangers in teens and tlaking 'serious not sporty martials arts'

The idea being they can learn and develop their body to escape if possible with by teen years almost 'super human' agility and if can't 'take out' attackers armed with knives without hesitation by teen years?

No I am not sending my kids to any of these (well DS goes Skateboarding lessons and DD Brownies!).

I am instead going to arm DD with a pretty little outfit that she can put on by spinning around really fast and then special wrist protectors which she can deflect knives and bullets with!

And for DS he will have a telephone booth strapped to his back permanantly as with the rise in use of the mobile phones he won't have anywhere to stick a cape on and his pants over his trousers otherwise!

Loonarillo!!! (That is what DS would call you!!)

40 feet maybe but these guys are taking drops considerably higher than 5 feet

15 to 20 more like... bearing mind this would take years to get to and its when they are at physical peek in late teens

now compare the amatures

With a whilst fiction example of how this can be used for real

(though I think here taking about some of the best in the world)

Unfortunelty its a bit hard to find a real video of somone running from real thugs

Are there classes you can do to equip you with the special power to fly or cut through metal with your special eye lasers?

That is something that would help you ooooohhhh or maybe a special magnet that is really really strong on the inside of a trench coat that you could open and the person who is trying to stab you immediately has the knife pulled from his hand.

Bloody Brilliant!!

I feel you are on a mission to convert the fluffiness of MN. But I think you are barking up the wrong tree.

PS if you want do links, at least have the effort to make them work. Read the manual.

yeah do a double flip from 40ft and land safely all the while turning your ribbon.

complete fantasy.

i agree that diversioanry activities are good for teenagers

but parkour is not one of them

bmx - i said - not motor cross.

you are taking every sport i ention and putng it to the extreme.

why?

i could do extreme knitting whilst handgliding off a cliff

not helpful.

stunt bmxing and skateboarding at local parks is not the same as the extreme versions you refer to.

why does a child have to learn a sport - then learn the extreme of that sport to fit into your idea of keeping them away from drugs and knifecrime.

just silly, v. silly to think that a teenagers jumping across buildings is anything but dangerous.

to think that if they fell they could land safely with training is deluded.

you cant land safely falling from the top of a building

Now I'm off to teach the children to jump off the sofa and land safely. Knees bent.

Custy you are wrong love - they could land safely if they have that webby stuff that comes out of their special Spidy gloves!

Tortington · 29/08/2009 10:18

ofcourse!

Don't forget the waterjet watch, to squirt them in the eye so you can run off.

Report
Tortington · 29/08/2009 10:21

i think that comes under extreme water sports.

not allowed

or no

but if you bother to look at the videos in the links they aint faked those are drops from high heights and advanced climbing abilities

Plus as mentioned part of it is to help them get away from those who mean them harm

Oooohhhhhhh Run like the Wind - don't jump off a 5 story building!

Sorry Little Johnny - What the feck are you doing on the roof of a 5 story building with those nasty boys with knives?????

(PS - disclaimer - we moved from the big smoke to a tiny villiage where the nearest you could get to a knife on the street is a drunken pillock nicking one from The Indian Cottage and then inadvertantly dropping it whilst weaving drunkenly up the High Road!!)

no they aren;t faked

what a brilliant sport to encourage your children to go into.

y'know rather than a sport that doesn't involve possible death.

i bet their mums are all really happy for them

Very freaky shit! People don't generally end up in situations whereby they are escaping from a knife wielding maniac unless they are somehow implicated in (and sharing) the lifestyle of knife wielding maniacs! What better way to get them implicated than to teach them how to survive in 'that world', rather than the real one, where such things rarely happen to those of us who do not place ourselves in such a position as to endanger ourselves.

Hey is this research for the DM!?

Report
wotzy · 29/08/2009 11:02

lol - This one should be in the DM, it shows a real balanced view on many levels. Just right for the DM.

Hmmm... as a teacher of kiddies who DO get implicated in all that kind of shit, I'd v much agree with Manatee. Do not carry a knife/wear a vest/practise martial arts because you are more likely to have someone 'have a go' then. Ds will most likely be going to school in Inner London. Am pretty sure he'll be fine. Would be more scared of drunks wanting to start a fight in a provincial town tbh.
