Ds has just finished Y2. He knows the number bonds for 10 but still has to work out number bonds for the other numbers on his fingers.

I wondered if this is an area of vital importance, ie we need to practise over the summer, or is it fine to work it out on fingers even in Y3?

Much easier for him if he has recall rather than having to use fingers.

I'd do a little bit of practise over the holidays, but nothing OTT. You can try singing them to a rhyme or revising them int he car on a trip out.

We're onto this over the summer too for DS who has just finished Year 1. Anyone got any suggestions for anything online which will help him practise number bonds up to 10?

Much better to learn it by heart in the long run. With a bit of practise he should get it quickly.

Play number bond snap. Take out the picture cards from a card set. Play it like regular snap but with the pairs being made by number bonds e.g. 5 and 5, 3 and 7, 2 and 8 etc.

Do it with money- give him 3p "how much more do you need to make 10p?" race against the clock to give the answer then reward him when he can give the answers within 5 seconds.

Or how about this hit the button game. Good for tables too.

Thanks. We've been concentrating on times tables in the past few months and forgotten to practise number bonds.

I just realised today that he didn't know them/ had forgotten them.

Does he need to know bonds for all numbers up to 20 off by heart?

Sorry just read he knows number bonds to ten but the ideas I gave can be extended to 20 or 100. (But will get a bit more expensive if you use money as the reward!)

I'd say he could do with knowing:

• nunber bonds to 10
• number bonds to 20
• 10s number bnds to 100 (30 and 70, 20 and 80, etc)

Numbers which add to make another number.

3 + 7 = 10
2 + 8 = 10

etc.

Someone on here posted the following song a while back

1 and 9 are number bonds
2 and 8 are friends
3 and 7, 4 and 6
5 and 5 are twins

(tune of Row, Row roughly)

Why do kids do these today and we didn't? Or did we but they weren't called number bonds?

Thanks for the links Mais. I love internet based games. They have a slightly better chance of getting through the hidden homework agenda than books or cds do.

Mind you, dd was so disappointed that her friend did better than she did at maths this year (last year it was the other way around) that she's decided to put a bit more work in this next year.

I tried to tell her that it doesn't matter if she's not top of the tree for everything, but she's her daddy's girl. She clearly inherited her competitive nature from him cos I ain't got none!

Might be too easy for you, but we have a game called "Shut the Box" which is good fun and really helps with number bonds up to 12.
