My dd who is an August child has scored 3 2As in her sats results - is this ok?

I thought it was a legal requirement for schools to publish an explanatory note as to what the different levels mean, as well as what the class range is. Certainly every school I've come across recently does.

Don't people read letters from school?

lljkk · 13/07/2009 20:13

If as many schools are giving out results without explanations, as appears to have happened, that's outrageous. What rubbish disorganisation on their part.

I don't mind boasting okay, I lie, I feel quite at it sometimes but it's better than pretend ignorance.

Anyone remember last year's thread: "Those of you whose DC got 3s in KS1 SATs, where to next?" or some title like that. Now that was a Boast-Athon. . There were A LOT of qualifying parents on that thread, too (Though not me! ).

We don't have any explanatory letters, and they don't publish the class range because there are two few in the year group so it would be obvious who was who IYSWIM.

I thought dd's looked pretty odd (same levels for things which I know she is ok with as opposed to areas where she really struggles) but I hadn't really thought to enquire more (just thought 'yeah, more random numbers from school'), but reading the threads on here actually I have found the explanations helpful - we don't get the a/b/c because of being in Wales, and I imagine she must be at the 'c' in writing (which is still damn good for a girl who could hardly write anything even copying at the start of the year).

I do wonder though, if the fact that parents of children who are doing below average are often in contact with the school beforehand and so they do not need the scores explaining, whereas parents whose children who are average/above average are not having the same level of contact with the school and so are not in the same possession of knowledge (IYGWIM).
DS got 2x1a 1x1b and 1x1c for his Yr 2 SATS, but ever since moving him to this school (Easter) I have had regular communication with his teacher, with little extra bits of work coming home, and the (good) surprise for me were the 1a's, not the 1c!

perhaps it is because intelligence jumps a generation, those whose kids have performed well, seem totally unable to,

a. google 'ks1 sats results'
b. ask at school
c. search the mnet archives

purpleduck · 13/07/2009 23:07

2c = "working towards"
2b = "on target"
2a = "Above target/ exceeds expectations...whatever"
3 is year 3 level

I had to check which direction it was going in...

To see if all the 2a's my dd got were ok

missile5 · 14/07/2009 00:30

my year 5 child got 5b for maths 5+ for reading and 4c for writing

MrsSpringsteen · 14/07/2009 00:42

bigus dealus

missile5 · 14/07/2009 00:47

yesus!!!

coolma · 14/07/2009 06:28

My three year old got all sixes

coolma · 14/07/2009 06:30

I'm a bit concerned about my three year old - her cantonese is really very basic. I guess she could just about get by with the local dialect of the hangzhou district, but should I be worried?

bequiet · 14/07/2009 08:27

I think you need to support her in the holidays [grin[

Takver · 14/07/2009 11:10

Well, I have to say that I wouldn't have started a thread, but I reckon all of you being so scathing about people's googleing abilities should try finding out something on line about the system in Wales from the Welsh Assembly (or any other) website!

MrsSpringsteen · 15/07/2009 01:35

in our dcs day you got 3's

do they still?

Takver · 15/07/2009 17:32

Just to say I would like to thank Feenie . . . armed with some background knowledge I went and asked the teacher if she was sure that she had meant what was put on dd's assessment for writing - and it was completely wrong and a mistake in transcription in the office!

(It may seem odd to be happy that she is graded lower than it originally looked like, but we have been through a whole saga with her being written down as lazy for refusing to do work, when in fact she is just utterly baffled by spelling and simultaneously can't bear to write the wrong thing, and I really don't want that to start again next year.)

Feenie · 15/07/2009 18:22

You are welcome - glad it got sorted out!
