Do some schools mix year one and reception classes?

So if a child who had already done reception would they stay with reception kids instesd of year one kids?

At our school, the reception cohorts are split at the end of the year: children born after Feb/March remain in Class One, and do an extra year along with the new reception children; the older ones move up to a new class and spend two years there. So, Class 1 is a mix of R and Yr 1, and Class 2 is a mix of Yr1 and Yr2.

do they do an extra year at primary school then or still just do seven years?

Our school has 5 Yr 1 & Yr 2 children (whichever need extra help) in a separate group within the Reception class. They do some activities with the Reception class and some with the Infant class. Unless a school takes in 30, 60 or 90 children each year, they have to split the classes somehow. Children are working at all sorts of levels within the classes in any case.

Sorry x posts bigchris. Schools do occasionally (in consultation with parents) keep a child down a year, but much more usually, they are just in a mixed class - some Year R children and some Year 1 children.

No extras - they do 7 years, like everywhere else. It's quite a small school, though, with only 5 classes in it. Classes 4 and 5 are split as well, with a mix of Yr 4, 5 and 6 pupils. It actually works very well.
