dc has 37 in his class. they have amalgamated a mixed yr1/r and a pure r class together. surely this is too many? plans are to split into ability streams for numeracy/literacy.
wdyt?

How many teachers and TAs?

Are you in England?

In England, key stage 1 classes must have no more than 30 children per class teacher IIRR.

yes in england. as i understand, 37 will be with one teacher in the afternoons, possible ta to be allocated.
in the ams, there is an extra teacher, for numeracy/literacy, so class will be divided with 7 children going into yr 2 for literacy, and leaving 30 for 1 teacher. in numeracy, yrs 1 and 2 will be mixed together,(i guess 60 kids?) and divided into 3 abilty streams, with 3 teachers. my worry is its all financial. why cant they employ another teacher and have 3 classes?

I would not be happy with 37 with 1 teacher, even with a TA in place TBH, but def not happy without.

so what to do?

This might be useful. For infant, read Reception, Yrs 1 & 2. The exception to the rule is where there is a Statemented child with 1-1 support - that child can take a class over 30.

I couldn't quite follow how the whole mixed classes/streaming thing works at your school, but if you think your school is in breach of the 1-30 ration, talk to the Head and then a Governor.

30 children and 2 TAs in a state school. One of the TAs may be part time but our school never lets a class go above 30.

For a class of 37, I would expect at least 2 TAs. Well, actually I would expect 2 teachers. As far as I can see from your posting there are also reception children in the class of 37, which makes it even more shocking. Very little children need plenty of adults on hand because they are so needy.

DD has 34 I think, of whom 5 are in a separate group with their own TA. "Officially" they are part of the Reception class, but they do quite a lot of stuff with the infant class depending on the topic etc. I was initially sceptical, but it has actually worked out quite well. The TA in question is a extra-qualified TA (there's a word for that isn't there?!) and there is another TA in the infant class, and one at least part time in the reception class (which is much smaller). In practice it has meant that the whole infants work together much more, in different combinations depending on the activity.

OP - Going on our experience, I would see how it works out in practice before raising any queries.

in reception DS has 32 in his class (one moved to area and won an appeal I believe, another has been moved fom another reception class-there are 3-). BUT there are about 4 adults with them. 1 teacher and 3 TA's (one of whom works with one child). So actually the ratio works out really well. Throughout the school the lids are spilt for literacy, and this is into small groups in the lower yrs. I understand they can't exceed 30 without a VERY good reason..

A state school with 22 in the class (2 form entry) with 1 full time teacher, 1 full-time T/a and an SEN assistant - better ratios than at the private school down the road.

DD has 28 in class with 1 teacher and 1 TA (voluntary aided faith school). School has limit of 28 per class, not sure on rationale.

My understanding was that in infants could have 30 kids, plus 1 more on appeal. Once you have 32 you need 2 teachers.

well only 19 but it is a mixed R/Y1 class
