Doing a writing topic with my support group - can you suggest three different group names?

I have a Year 1 and 2 study support group three mornings a week, for 30 minutes a day.

This half term we have a four week "writing for fun" theme, to finih the year off.

In week 1, we will be looking at different forms of writing such as fiction, non fiction, poetry, cominc strips and plays and discussing why they are written, their purrpose, what makes us want to read more, how they are illustrated, etc. Lots of sharing of books and talking about them.

Weeks 2-4 will be the children planning and writing their own work, independently. They will chose their own topic and their own form, and using the support from the study support workers and parents who stay (this part is optional) write a story, poem, play, non fiction, etc. they will also illustrate it. They can choose to handwrite or type.

In the final week we will put it all together and in the order we want, with a front cover planned. I will then scan them all in and have a book made out of them, sing something like BonusPrint photobooks. We will then, when it arrives, have a one off additional session to share the book with the group and their parents, and the head teacher, etc. nd the children can present it at their celebration assembly for others to look at.

However, what is need now is three group names. To manage the sessions it is easier for me to split the children into groups, each with their own study support worker to help and support them.

But i need some related group names, based on the theme, and my mind is blank - I blame jetlag!

Any ideas?

Authors? Famous Titles? Styles?, ....
Infact why don't you let the children decide after the inital discussion?

have they discovered harry potter yet?

we used the house names lol, although no-one wanted to be in slitherin, or whatever it's called.

Sexonlegs · 01/06/2009 21:36

Pens, Pencils and Crayons?

Hulababy · 01/06/2009 21:37

ingles - not enough time to spend deciding on names with the children sadly. Not really sure TBJ - possible authors (may be too hard for this age though, esp my group - see below) or well done book characters.

Too young for Harry Potter and not sure many would understand quill, etc.

Children are 5-7y; all requiring support with literacy, predominately, although not exclusively, EAL or BME children.

I was thinking more along the lines of Horrid Henry/ Charlie and Lola/Mr Men/Hairy Mclairy/Dennis the Menace for characters
or Morpugo/Donaldson/Potter for Authors
Books they will know and have (hopefully) had read to them

ingles2 · 01/06/2009 21:44

Morpurgo

madwomanintheattic · 01/06/2009 21:46

lol @ not old enough for hp - our yr 2's chose those names

catinthehat2 · 01/06/2009 21:48

Dennis the Menacs

Roger the Dodger

Minnie the Minx

Hulababy · 01/06/2009 22:00

madwomanintheattic - trust me, for this group, they are not up to Harry Potter yet at all. One or two may have seen the films but they are not up on the story at all. Many are still reading and enjoying picture books. Although they do enjoy listening to Horrid Henry although I tend to split aa short story over the week as many find sitting for that length of time difficult.

all vital reading material

Hulababy · 01/06/2009 22:48

tryingtobemarypoppins - no, they aren't. Why do you suggest that. These genres are all genres taught about in schools in Year 1 and 2.

The chlildren will chose one of these for their own independent writing.

ear in mind the actual concent may be of varying levels also.

For some children thy will sit with word mats and story ideas and go for it. They may need support with organising and ordering, or planning in advance.

For others they will need more one to one support. I would be looking for them to use initial and end letter sounds.

For example:

Once upon a time a man lived in a light house.

The above might be a story opener from a child. One child may get the words spelt write and formed accurately. Another we might get:

Ws pn t a man lvd in a lIt hs
