Is £12 cheap or expensive for a school trip during school time?

The trip is to a manor house for history lessons whilst doing the tudors.

we paid £14 last year for similar

BlueCowWondersAgainAndAgain · 01/06/2009 17:11

seems average to me - we've been asked for £9 for morning only, £24 or £19 at most for all day, but often around £12.

LIZS · 01/06/2009 17:12

Probably on cheaper side of average.

littleolwinedrinkerme · 01/06/2009 17:12

Does it include transport? We have been asked for £5.50 for Tudor Trip to a castle that has free entry (and is walking distance) - so if yours does incude transport probably seems ok to me.

stripeypineapple · 01/06/2009 17:13

I think that's probably about average.

I've just paid £12.50 for a trip to Woburn Abbey Safari Park and I think I paid the same last term for a trip to Windsor Castle.

If you check out the website of the place they're going you can see how much entrance is and add on a bit for petrol cost and coach hire and you'll see it probably is cheaper.

Ivykaty44 · 01/06/2009 17:14

why can't the children walk, little?

I have just paid £15.85 for a trip which was very local.

£12 of it was for the activities and the rest was for the coach. Oh and apparently it had already been subsidised by the fund raising committee.

stripeypineapple · 01/06/2009 17:35

I doubt very much that the school is trying to profit from parents by scamming a few extra quid out of them for school trips.

It might seem expensive but maybe they are getting a guided tour, perhaps activities will be laid on for them, there's insurance to consider too.

I'm pretty sure it will all add up, pricey as it is.

If you were really concerned you could ask the school office for a breakdown of costs.

They would probably think you were incredibly arsey but it would at least tell you where your money has gone.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 01/06/2009 17:37

Coaches are very expensive. £12 seems about average for day trip that will probably include entry and a guide/education person to deliver the programme at the museum.

coppertop · 01/06/2009 17:44

£12 is typical here. The coach hire and insurance will cost a fair bit.

scienceteacher · 01/06/2009 18:14

£12 is very cheap.

Our school trips are often in the region of £25 - £35.

seeker · 01/06/2009 18:18

Most of that will be coach.

scienceteacher · 01/06/2009 18:19

A 50 seater coach can easily be in excess of £300 for a day.

lljkk · 01/06/2009 18:21

That would be quite dear around here -- I think I paid £7 or £9 last yr for DD to do similar.

trickerg · 01/06/2009 18:23

Around us, coaches are about £250-£350 per day, depending on size of coach, etc, and it doesn't really make much difference how far you're going. It is more expensive if you're interfering with a school run.

£12 for a one day trip would be very expensive here. The most I have paid is about £6/£6.50, probably for a zoo trip or similar.

dd1 is at high school and I've to pay £12 for an outing to a safari park, but that is a purely fun trip, not educational.

supagirl · 04/06/2009 09:59

We recently paid £11 for a trip to the zoo for ds in reception but that is because the reception is large (60 kids in total) and due to the age of the kids they need a high adult/child ratio so the cost of the extra adults plus the coach was included. I could have taken him for half that as the zoo is just round the corner, but I felt he gains extra by going with his friends/school - the excitement, a bit of independence and they were able to focus on the particular topic they were covering (endangered animals). So I think it's reasonable. At our school it's voluntary so if you can't afford it you don't pay, or you pay what you can afford.

£12 sounds reasonable to me.
