Curriculum + any websites telling you what they should know at the end of year 3

Is there any websites that tell you what your child should have learned by the end of each school year. My DD1 will be completing year 3 this June and I would like to compare what she knows to what she should know. I have a few friends whose children go to different schools and who are younger and who seem to be more advanced in their learning. The school teacher tells me she is doing fine, and she doesn't have any problems, but I think she might be a bit behind. I have my concerns about the school at the moment but not enough to actually go in to complain. If I knew a bit more about the actual curriculum then I might be a bit more content. I don't about you but I feel the school doesn't keep us informed enought.

The QCA website has the curriculum for each year on it I think.
Or the National curriculum online.

Each school is different and can approach the aims and objectives differently, so there will be some variation between schools as I understand it.

What are you specifically worried about?

Concepta · 27/05/2009 20:45

I am worried that she is behind where she should be - not because of her ability but because I feel the school maybe isn't what it should be. My friends children for example are more advanced with their maths and can complete written work faster - as their reading etc seem to be more advanced. The class she was in last year had 16 children, this year there was an amalgamation and there is now 30. There are a few problem children in the class and I feel that the teacher doesn't have time to give the children time. If I knew what they should know by this stage and if she hasn't reached that level I would give her extra tuition over the holidays to get her up to the level where she should be. Maybe I am worrying about nothing, but I want the best for my daughter and not to be failed by the education system.

What does she seem to be behind in exactly? What maths? What is she reading?

Concepta · 27/05/2009 21:04

This is my problem - I don't know if she is behind or not - thats why I wanted to get a website with curriculum details stating what they should know. I am comparing her to my friends children who go to different schools. When they are with her even though they are a number of months younger than her they can read for example the instructions on a computer game better than her. She has only just started doing addition using the carrying over of a number whereas they are doing multiplication.

Children should do multiplication every term, from KS1 onwards. By the end of Y2 they should all know their 2x, 5x and 10x tables. Children don't usually start addition with carrying until Y4.

By the end of Y3 I guess the average reader should be reading short chapter books - imagine an 8 year-olds version of Horrid Henry with a slightly better vocabulary!

Is your daughter following the English Curriculum?

Concepta · 27/05/2009 21:18

No I thought they were all the same. We live in N Ireland

Just found curriculum for N Ireland and found you're way ahead of us (creatively speaking!) Found some great resources - thanks!!

Concepta - I am in NI also. Look at the CCEA website for info on the curriculum for KS1.

Concepta · 28/05/2009 16:18

Thank you I will do that later on this evening.
