writing b and d - any good resources for dd?

This is my first message - eek!

My dd is in yr 1 and cannot write her b and d or p and q the right way round. Does anyone know of any resources that would keep us both interested (other than just writing them out again and again!)

Many thanks
Vic

Relax - she'll get it in the end. DS1 is in year 2 and even he sometimes gets it wrong. if he's still doing it at 15, I'll be worried.

Chinwag · 20/05/2009 20:43

I understand it an educational stage that they all go through. I think she'll be fine.

Jux · 20/05/2009 20:44

That's so normal, it really is no problem. She will sort it out given time. Don't get her worked up about it or turn it into an issue. How many of us have cringed with embarrassment looking at our old school books, which mum kept in the bottom of the wardrobe, for that very reason?

Cybermum · 20/05/2009 20:48

Yes this is normal. But what DD1's Yr1 teacher taught her was that the word bed looked like a bed - so she could work out which way bs and ds went. Hope this makes sense.

Sibh · 20/05/2009 20:48

It is totally normal.

We say 'thumbs up for d' so that he can see the shape and that helps when he is reading.
It's a nicely non-nagging reminder ...

I had to have a look at this, I recently found an old primary school book where I had written a very involved story about Rodin Hoob! I don't remember anyone teaching me how to get it right, but I can do it now - I've even got a degree and everything!

mrz · 20/05/2009 20:50

Try these ideas

VicNicholas · 20/05/2009 20:56

Thank you mrz - that is perfect - I know what I will be doing at half term!

rek21 -I also love the idea of Rodin Hoob - one of the lesser known Hoob characters.

Thanks everyone for making my first mumsnet query a useful one!

And where are my manners?
Welcome to mumsnet too.

I still sometimes have problems when writing b and d, although never on a keyboard. The way I remember it is to write the word "bed" - when I was in primary, I made it into a picture of a bed, but I don't need to do that now that I'm in my 40s!

Try this:

Sorry to hijack the thread, my DD has problems with b and d too but also with her numbers ie getting them the wrong way around, particularly 2, 3 and 5. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can help her remember these? She's 5, in Yr.1 (summer baby).

Thank you.
