DD (just8) worked hard learning three different pieces, then she was told to buy the exam book, as there was an easier piece in their. SO we have got the exam book work out which piece the teacher wanted her to learn and have worked on it over the last 4 days.
She then came out of school today saying she wasn't doing her exam till Christmas but other child in her lessons with is doing it this summer.

Is that normal, and will that mean she will be stuck with the exam pieces for another term or will she be moved on with her friend. Really was struggling to keep her going with the same pieces week in week out. Personally really don't see the point in the exams, takes some of the pleasure away. She can always do them when she's older.

In order to be doing the exam in the summer term you would have had to entered and paid in April - next entry due in in sept for Nov/Dec exams (assuming you mean the Associated Board - although most are similar). If she gets bored of the pieces I'm sure she can do some others for a while, but actually there aren't many lessons until the Summer hols, and after that the teacher has to decide if dd's ready to enter.

Thanks foofi sounds like dd may be in a bit of a muddle then. Don't know about the board just that the exam book is by trinity guildhall.
She has just realised she can read the music so has been enjoying trying out new pieces.

We had something similar with DS's guitar exam. He tends to work best if he has something to focus on (like an exam/ concert etc)but because his teacher hadn't told him when his next exam could be we weren't putting a lot of practice in. Then his teacher said because he didn't quite seem ready, he hadn't entered DS. I was a bit . Now I discuss with the teacher at the beginning of each term whether we're focussing on a concert/ exam or what...

I think the Trinity dates are roughly the same as AB. Although exams aren't the be-all and end-all, it is quite satisfying for kids to have something to aim for and to do a performance, whether in an exam, or concert or festival. There's always a fine line though between being well-prepared and being bored of the exam syllabus - just see how it goes and I'm sure the teacher will find her something new to do if she needs it. Good luck
