Should I know DD's sounds?

ou ai ure oa ea ie .... and the rest ....

Should I just know what these sounds are? (Because I have no idea what they are when I look at them on their own like this )

I have to think really hard when dd comes home with new sounds to work them out . I have to think of different words with those letter combinations in, decide what the most common usage of those letter combinations is, and then decide/guess what sound its meant to be.

Am v as have been teaching dd 'ou' as in could/should/would and she came home today and told me teacher had told her to tell me its 'ou' as in out/shout/about.

Is it because I never did phonics at school? Or do you forget it anyway once reading/when older?

Btw this may sound like I'm a bit thick, but honestly have a degree (in english ).

Had to learn them as I had no idea and was saying them wrong.

Look here at the bottom of this page. All the sounds

Oops. You have to click on the jolly phonics tab on the left hand of the screen.

It's tricky isn't it. My DD came home with a print out every night with the new sound, along with the asociated action and handily a couple of example words - otherwise I too would be stuck.

Take a look at the free section in Phonics International

Not just me then .
Thank you for the links.

Curious about whether you would remember the phonics/sounds if you had been taught to read in this way, or do you just forget as you start ot read/get older.
Does anyone know?

I don't think I was taught to read in this way as I didn't know any of them. I bought the Jolly Phonics CD and learnt them with my DD. I cannot imagine how I would have helped her to learn to read if I had not known them tbh.

BTW I don't think it sounds a bit thick at all, I think schools should be helping parents more on this as well as ensuring all parents that are listening to reading have some phonic knowledge.

I was never taught phonics as a child but the experts say that people will revert to phonics when they encounter new words personally I go down the "root" word route but I'm not saying that is "normal"...or good

I come from the Dark Ages way before phonics

dd is still in Reception, and most of them, so far, I can guess at - but very grateful for the links, am going to bookmark for future use!

eksimum my dd1 was taught this way and still uses the sounds for spelling. She remembers them very well. She is year 7
