Good luck. It will all be fine. You'll wonder what all the stress was about.

I am a first year student and feel a bit thrown in the deep end but if it goes well then I will feel better about the rest of the placement I suppose. Thanks

Good luck!

Who and what are you teaching?

schneebly · 10/05/2009 20:18

Y4 literacy. It is SATS week so the class teacher wnated them to get in some reading comprehension practise. I am starting with an interactive presentation reminding them about looking for key words in the text and reading between the lines with some examples to do together then I am going to read them a passage from 'The Mango Tree' by Madhur Jaffrey (they are looking at stories from other cultures) and they will have questions to answer on it as well as being invited to predict what might happen. After going through their answers to some of the questions together at the end I will read them the rest of the story.

I just hope it goes well.

Thanks for the good luck wishes

hi there.

good luck for tomorrow.

oxocube · 10/05/2009 20:22

Good luck! I teach Yr 1 and still get nervous after every holiday! The nerves disappear after 10 mins though. Hope all goes swimmingly tomorrow

schneebly · 10/05/2009 20:23

I have to teach the odd class to cover absent staff or PPA. I get nervous too. You will be fine, just be 'good enough'. You don't have to be the best teacher that ever was. That makes me feel better about the whole thing!

schneebly · 10/05/2009 20:24

Do you really oxo? I hope my nerves disappear too! I wil repprt back how it goes.

I think that is part of the problem mrsmaidamess - I tend to set ridiculously high standards for myself and and if I don't meet them I feel like I have 'failed' iykwim? I keep trying to remind myslef that I am a 1st year undergraduate and they will not be expecting something amazing.

hi are you retraining to be a teacher?

i retrained about 4 years ago. it is the best thing i ever did. i love it. i am teaching year 2 this year. when i was training i had a brilliant mentor and learnt so much.

your lesson sounds fine. just remember to keep the lesson well paced. lots of them doing/talking not to much of just you talking (one of my early mistakes)

be confident ! don't expect to get things right all the time - self evaluation of lessons is very helpful.

if you need any help with anything just post on mumsnet i am usually on most nights.

schneebly · 10/05/2009 20:41

Thanks ilove

I originally studied acting but I realised that I was only ever good into panto and that is a rather seasonal business then had a lot of crappy jobs before becoming a mum...twice.
I was self employed for a while doing drama workshops with children in schools and I really loved it but it was when I was working at a Youth Club the local Headteacher said to me that she thought I would make a wonderful teacher that I remembered I had flirted with the idea years before.
Unfortunately I lived in the Scottish wilderness at the time and access to study was difficult but we moved to the North West of England almost 2 years ago and I am just coming to the end of my 1st year doing a part-time BA un Primary Education with QTS.

You didn't ask for my life story did you lol?

I teach Y5 ( part time now since having 2 DDs). That lesson sounds really interesting. ( I may need more info later ).
You have really thought hard about what is needed and I'm sure they will enjoy it.

stillenacht · 10/05/2009 20:58

Good luck with tomorrow! I remember it well It will be great i am sure

mom101 · 10/05/2009 21:25

Good Luck- get a good nights sleep!

Lulumama · 10/05/2009 21:27

i know you will be wonderful ! you have a natural rapport with children and you put so much work and effort into everything, sleep well and good luck xxxxxxxxxx

lilolilmanchester · 10/05/2009 21:30

no personal experience of teaching but wanted to wish you good luck! The adrenalin which will be making you nervous is there for a reason and most actors/professional presenters experience it. If you get the wobbles, breathe in and out slowly. Do let us know how you get on xxxx

footballsgalore · 10/05/2009 21:36

Good luck!
I have been teaching 10 years and still get a twinge after holidays. Keeps us on our toes and I think it's because you can never predict what will happen in any day. - But thats why I love the job.
Enjoy tomorrow and, to echo others, remember, you are there to learn. Not to be an expert on day one!
No one will expect you to know everything straight away!
You sound cut out for teaching....it's the perfectionist thing...

Go to bed!!! Tired and grumpy is not a good 'first day look' x

schneebly · 10/05/2009 22:22

Thanks everyone - have had a relaxing bath and am off to bed now

ilovepeppapig · 11/05/2009 19:40

how did it go?

schneebly · 12/05/2009 07:11

I was too knckered last night to even come on MN!

It went pretty well - there are lots of things I could have done better but the teacher said I looked 100% confident (all that acting came in handy) and the children engaged with it really well so I am very happy. Thanks to all the well-wishers
