my 6 year old son has mild cerebral palsy and goes to a mainstrem school.his left side is weaker than right. we were told theat some children with cp may have concentration problems.
my son is below average on everythina ta school, last parents evening,i asked the teacher was he good at anything ,his reply was " some children arent good at anything"
total arsehole,
my son had 1-2-1 support for 1 afernoon each week in nursery and reception, this was mainly 2 see how well he was doing with his left side, he was managing well so they stopped it half way through reception.
the teachers say he has problems concentrating and is behind with everything,
i had a meeting a few weeks ago with his 2 teachers and special needs coordinator from the school, i asked for him 2 get some kind of support even if its just 1 hour per week, i was told there was a 3 year waiting list and that they would contact other "agencies" as they called them into seeing wat can be done !!
so i have yet anither meeting at the school next week with some1 from the special needs section at local council, and his teachers.
the top and bottom of it is, my son doesnt concentrate at school and i feel that if he had a bit of extra support it would benefit him greatly, im not saying he would come on in leaps and bounds but maybe hit some of his targets.
wat do u think ?

Do you see a community paediatrian regularly? My son had a fablous community paediatian who was able to get things done. (Like intervening to stop my son getting expelled from pre school at the age of 2 years and 8 months)

He was discharged at the end of reception, but we are allowed to contact her if there is a problem. Thankfully my son is doing well and we don't need the community paediatrian.

A three year waiting list is total nonsense, the school is lying. The school has resources that they could use to provide some support very easily. The local authority provides money in the form of "school action" budget. The big problem you face is that the school decides which children get help. This can be very unfair.

I hope you don't think I am being daft, but have you had your son's hearing tested. It is possible for a child to have problems concentrating that have nothing to do with CP. For example my son had severe glue ear. When he was issued with hearing aids and his school bought a soundfield system his concentration improved.

Lots and lots of 6 yr old boys have problems with concentration and don't get 1 to 1 support.

sorry to hear about your troubles, haven't much to offer except banging the drum for supplements

I find a zinc supplement helps concentration tremendously

of course I understand there are other significant issues but I have found help with this
