Doctor Dog has completely freaked out my ds.

My ds is quite sensitive and takes things fairly literally. He is in reception (a young one, he will be 5 in August). On Tuesday his teacher read him Dr Dog, not a book that I know, anyway he has been on and off since then, been distraught, inconsolable with worries about washing his hands, eating baked beans ( he doesn't want me to give them to him any more), and nits sucking his blood. It would all be funny, but he is seriously upset. He is also afraid that the teacher will read it to him again. I'm not sure what to say/do to help him with this.

My two loved Dr Dog, but it is vile

It's about a horrid, unkempt and unhygienic family called the Gumboyles and their dog, who is a doctor. It's full of stuff like Grandpa eating baked beans and then 'farting so hard he blew the roof of the house right off'. To be honest, I'm a bit surprised that a teacher would read it to a reception class.

I think your best bet is to have a quiet word with the teacher and ask him/her to have a reassuring chat with your child to explain that it's just a joke and not true.

Absolutely not appropriate to be read to a class of 4 and 5 year olds.

We bought this for DD1, 2 yrs, without reading first. Promptly gave it to a charity shop. I didn't want to have to explain the smoking!

How's the bump?

I saw this at the library and wouldn't let DD have it...it really is revolting.

Thank you for replies, i'm not surprised he was so upset! He does take life quite seriously bless him. He was sobbong for an hour last night, i'm just hoping that that's the end of it. Bump (all fine thank you puzzlerocks) is now overdue so i think he's also unsettled about the baby arriving.

Don't know the book but def have a word with the teacher to make sure she doesn't read it out again - it probably upset more than just your ds.
