they opened the doors at 8.55, let those stood at doors in, then promptly clsoed doors, maximum a minute open??..surely this isnt right?, this means most children are given a late mark and the t/a's actually stand there like bouncers with stern faces(one in partic!) saying no go to main office to get late mark?????..am going to broach this with head on thur, dd not been marked late but its getting to the point were i hardly have time to pass her, her lunch and book bag without the door being clsoed!?

Very petty!

ShellingPeas · 28/04/2009 22:07

They're bonkers. Mine get 10 minutes with the gate open between 8:40 and 8:50 - anyone after that time then has to sign the late register.

Seems very very petty!

ellingwoman · 28/04/2009 22:08

What time do they start? If it's 8.55 I can't see the problem - everyone who's there on time gets let in. If the start time is 9.00 then you need to say something.

Surfermum · 28/04/2009 22:10

We have music piped to the playground at 8.40 and you can drop them at the door any time after that until 8.50. There are different entrances for the different classes. We're greeted at the school gate by the Head and/or Deputy and at the entrance door by the teacher.

One morning I was shooing dd along saying "hurry up, we're going to be late" and the Head said "oh don't worry, take your time it's such a lovely morning".

Kbear · 28/04/2009 22:12

Gate opens at 8.45, closes at 8.55. After that you go to the office if you're late.

PinkChick · 29/04/2009 20:43

doors open at 8.55 and they say thats when school starts too!??..my dd has just gone 6, its takes her a good 2-3 mins of faffing about to get her packed lunch away, coat off, drink on table and books in tray!...spoke to parent liason officer in school today, she's going to speak to the head, but TBH the head is the pettiest!, ive seen her wait for the running children to get close, smirk at them then close door, this aprticualr time all the other entracnes had bene locked as well, leaving these 5-6 children stranded in playground!!

From 8:35 to 8:45, those who have signed up for a flexible start time are able to go into classrooms via front door and are signed in by office staff. This is to accommodate those who have Juniors at the school's other site, and is not encouraged for others.

The rest play in the playground till 8:45, when teachers come out and they all go into the classroom in a line.

After 8:45, you're supposed to go in the front door and be marked as late, but there is scope to sneak in through the classroom door, if the playground supervisor is busy chatting .

MrsWeasley · 29/04/2009 22:41

Reception to year 2, school starts at 9. Doors opens at 8.45. After that you go in through the office door. (gates are open to the playground so can arrive anytime you wish)

year 3-6 Different school - starts at 8.50 and children are supervised into playground from 8.40 (although gates are open from about 8)

islandofsodor · 29/04/2009 22:48

The playground opens at 8.30am and is supervised(earlier you can drop them into the before school club). The whistle goes at 8.45am, it then takes them until about 8.55am for them to get inside, take coats off etc and get to their classroom so if you arrive during that time you go in via reception and they go staight to their class.

The teacher sends someone down to pick up the register about 9.00am so you have until the register is taken and returned before they get a late mark.

MummyDoIt · 29/04/2009 22:51

Ours start at 8.45. All classes line up in the playground when the bell goes then file in. The door is closed after the last one is in. Reception go straight in to their classroom any time between 8.35 and 8.45. I think in both cases you only get a late mark if they arrive after the register has been taken so you probably have five or ten minutes after the bell has gone.

CandleQueen · 29/04/2009 22:57

Children allowed on site from 8.45 (unless they are at the Breakfast Club that starts at 8.30).
Registration is done in class at 9am.
Any child arriving in the class after 9.05 gets a late mark.
Gates are locked about 9.10 and then anyone later than taht has to go through the office.

Nighbynight · 29/04/2009 23:00

this all sounds a bit harsh!
Our school is open from 7:30 onwards, you are late if you arrive after 7:55.
The children just go straight to the classroom.
They have some sort of system by which they know if the children don't arrive by 8:15, then the office phones to the parents.

RustyBear · 29/04/2009 23:00

Where I work the gate to the playground is unlocked at 8.30 & the children play until 8.40 unless it's raining, when they go straight in. The registers are supposed to be taken straight away, so any child arriving after 8.45 has to go to the office, so we have a record that they are actually there, and they can be added to the school dinner list if necessary.

We once had a fire alarm go off at 9am, & there were 6 children who had 'sneaked in' & weren't on the register - if one of them had been left behind in school, no-one would have known.

weblette · 30/04/2009 11:03

Gates open 8.30, bell rings at 8.55, children line up and are led in. It's an infant school so up to Yr 2.

PinkChick · 30/04/2009 11:11

so basically dd's school are being unreasonable excpecting EVERYONE to be there the moment the doors open and closing it immediatly after that group ahs gone in!, have spoken to them, but what good it will do i dont know?, if my dd ever got a late mark id have more sway to complain but for now all i can do is ask what the policy is and ask them to make it more clear to us all!

Ours is a huge school (over 700 pupils) so they stagger the doors opening to allow parents to drop more than one child in.

Yrs 3-6 doors open 8.40 -no parent needed to be there while they go in.

Nursery is 8.45 (don't know when they close their doors as I don't have a child in nursery)

reception, yrs 1 & 2 doors open at 8.50 but they have until 9am until they close the doors. Children in at 8.50 sit nicely on the floor waiting for the others.

They all enter through doors leading off the playground straight into the classrooms.

This staggering allows you to see yr 2 child and a reception child in without having to rush. These years have to have a parent/carer see them into school.

atworknotworking · 30/04/2009 18:52

Surfermum- piped music, greated by the head, what a lovely day I want my dd to go to your school it sounds loverly. ours is a bit naff, nice and new but you never see the head, no nice music and certainly no polite comments, bit like a hitler youth camp at times

Squirdle · 30/04/2009 19:06

Our gates open at 8.40 and whistle goes at 8.55. As long as you are there before the register, there doesn't seem to be a problem (and obviously there beofre the class has settled, therefore not disturbing the cless.

DS2's teacher (yr 1) did a parent and child workout this morning You get there at 8.45 and do a light workout to music until the whistle goes. Twas fab...loads of parents, children and teaching staff joined in! Tis happening every Thursday!

Squirdle · 30/04/2009 19:07

Well I obviously cannot spell today!!

katiestar · 01/05/2009 18:00

we are a v small school. They say they cannot provide supervision until 8.40 but in practice the gates and doors are open as soon as the first teacher gets there and children start arriving from about 8.20. The children go in and dump their bags and coats ,then play outside until the bell goes at 9.00 (sometimes a bit later if its a nice day). Then they line up and go in
If its raining they just go in to teh classroom as soon as they arrive and receptions can do this too if tehy want.

ChasingSquirrels · 01/05/2009 18:08

doors open at 8.35, school starts at 8.45. Doors probably close about 8.50/8.55 with all the coming and going of parents.

If they operated a policy like the OP's then I would just ensure we were there by 8.50 to be on time.

I can't see what difference it makes that your dd needs a couple of minutes to sort out her lunch/coat/bag etc once inside - presumably they all do, and it doesn't stop her being ready to go in at 8.55.

Based on the OP's comments - the attitude of the staff stinks.

DS1's Junior school gates open at 8.30 (I think? we don't get ther euntil 8.45 earliest ) - or at least that's when they're "supervised" from - think they're open earlier than that but we leave them at their own risk unless in the Breakfast or other morning club. They line up to go in at 8.55 - marked if not in school by 9.05 (again I think).

DS2's infant school - gates open at 8.45 and they go straight into the building. Main door closed at 9.00. Marked late if not there by 9.05

pooka · 01/05/2009 18:27

Gates are open from about 8.30am (never been there that early!). The children all hang around in the playground until the bell goes just before 9am. At which point they rush into lines and are taken in by the teacher/TA. As soon as they are in, the doors are locked. So unless there at 9.01 at the very latest, you have to walk round the school from the playground to the foyer and sign in late (cue tuts of disapproval). I think this system works really well.
