hello
we might be moving to the Oxford area - either in Oxford or driving distance to Oxford in the next few months and will be looking to place our 3 children in a primary school (currently year 3 and reception).
Does anyone recommend or not recommend any local Oxfordshire schools.
Any help and guidance would be brilliant.
thank you so much.
Best wishes
C

meadowbir - the school in Abingdon that I've heard the most good things about is St Nicolas - we know quite a few parents who could afford to send their DC to private schools but haven't because they've managed to get a place there.
I've also heard good things about Rush Common and Long Furlong Primary Schools, but don't know anyone personally with DC at either; there is just generally a good buzz about their names. (Which I don't hear about Dunmore or Carswell, for example)

I know a lot of people who have moved to Abingdon for Primary schools, then for senior they send their DC to St Birinius/Didcot Girls School, or go private, or move further afield.

HTH.

Hi, moving to Oxford soon and having been reading this thread with interest, but it is from a few years back. I have a DD who is still in nursery but as she will start primary school within a couple of years, we need to get the next area right. We will be renting, want to be in Oxford itself (no villages) and good public transport. I know some areas (I lived there years and years ago), but wasn't a mummy, so it's all from a different perspective now. Any recommendations appreciated!

I can't be of much help on the specifics because we home ed and so I don't pay quite so much attention to what is happening at individual schools. However, I can tell you that since this thread was last active, the population increase has hit Oxford city schools particularly hard. Many families are being presented with offers of school places which are just unworkable for them, for example being too far away or placing siblings at different schools.

Are you sure you can't be persuaded to consider a nearby town or village where the school situation will be better? Some have a great bus service into Oxford, so you could get into Oxford frequently.

Alternatively, bear in mind that with Oxford's very mobile population, there is often a good chance of getting into the school you want if you are prepared to wait for it. Many parents who don't get their children into their preferred school by the start of Reception will send them to a different school. Then, when someone moves away and a place at the preferred school comes up after a few months or a year, they don't want to unsettle their child from their existing school in order to take the place up. That means that even if you are not high on the waiting list, others above you may decide not to take the place. If you keep your child at preschool or else home educate then you'll be ready and willing to grab a place whenever it comes up. This strategy won't always work, especially with the few ultra-popular schools, but may be worth considering.

I see increasing numbers of people at the home ed groups who are home educating temporarily while waiting for a school place. And Oxford is awash with home educating families, so there is no shortage of things to do while you wait!

My dc are at primary school in Oxford city and I agree with Saracen that there is huge pressure on places at most primary schools within the city. Several are having to increase their intakes quite substantially and build new classrooms to accommodate the higher numbers. If you look at the schools admissions part of the Oxfordshire County Council website you'll be able to see how many children applied to each school last year, and how many were awarded places. You could then look at those most likely to have places, and start reading Ofsted reports and talking to other parents - then move as close as you can!
