Residential school trips - what age would you think is okay for this?

How young would you let your DC go away on a supervised residential trip with school/Scouts or another reputable child-friendly group which the child knows well?
Does your answer vary if:
a. less than 5 nights
b. 5 nights or more
c. to another country (France)?

Would be interested in actual experiences as well as views on this. Specifically interested in primary age.

Thank you.

I think we were at cross purposes-I originally said that Beavers don't camp but to me that is canvas. Any leader in Scouts would need a different licence for outdoor camping to indoor sleepovers. I think that one night is a sensible starting point-I would want to be sure that parents could have them back!

I expect there are hundreds of Squirrels all over the country as are Badgers etc! It wasn't highly original!

It was also some time ago so I expect they may have moved onto more exciting names.

DS is currently (due back tonight) on his first trip away with the school and he is in Year 3 (aged 8). It was a Fri-Mon trip. There were several parents who felt their DC's were too young to go on the trip (only 10 from his class went). I felt that he was old enough and will give him the independence he currently really craves.

I have missed him like crazy though

Oh phew yes Malik safe too. Beavers sleepovers are in a hut/building of some kind, not under canvas. Thanks for clarifying piscesmoon.

We have Sunshine and Bubbles btw!
