ds does the bbc website one occasionally. but the best way to learn how to typ fast is to actually type. once they know the basics of where there fingers are supposed to go, they need to start chatting online to get there speed up. best way imo

DTDs have done the BBC dance mat typing one. DTD2 is now better than me .

I would say do it earlier rather than later. ds1 learned when he was about 7 or 8. He doesn't touchtype strictly now (he's 11), but uses quite a lot of the fingers and does type very fast.

once they learn they can play this mad game it's addicitve though

roisin · 10/04/2009 13:51

That's fun southeastastra.
I just got 14th, which I'm very proud of.

(I feel a bit odd now though, and my vision was going a bit blurry! I'm not sure it's good for you. "Danny" has the top 12 places this week, and appears to have been playing it constantly for the last couple of days!)

We use this one at the junior school I work at; it has lots of games & you can put your own words in. The children love it. It focuses more on using the correct fingers than touch typing without looking at the keyboard, but once they are up to speed with the right fingers it's easier to move on to true touch-typing. You can get it cheaper for home use (£25 I think)

southeastastra · 10/04/2009 13:59

14th ! blimey no wonder you feel odd

that's about 1000 wpm

roisin · 10/04/2009 16:38

I can type fast, but my sight isn't fab. Maybe I should go and get my eyes tested?

Yesterday in GAME I picked up a copy of Sight Training, because I'd played it on a friend's and enjoyed it, but am rubbish at peripheral vision and stuff.

When I got home I discovered I'd picked up the wrong game!
It was blue and looked similar ...?!
I need my eyes testing, don't I?!

southeastastra · 11/04/2009 15:01

yes you should!

i just got 252nd with 90% accuracy

roisin · 11/04/2009 21:07

I wanted to do the German one, but don't have the umlauts on my keyboard!

I did the UNIX codes one instead, which was hysterical.

Am off to play again tonight. My accuracy is around 90%, but I want to improve that as you lose LOADS of points for mistakes.

My Dyspraxic DS2 is coming on a pace with Mavis Beacon - it's really really good. I think there are various MB packages - but it's motivational and does the job. He now uses a laptop for most of his literacy at school.

Hassled · 11/04/2009 21:11

this one

southeastastra · 11/04/2009 21:18

fun isn't it, lol nqc got about 6 million wpm too when i linked it a while back

roisin · 11/04/2009 21:20

1814 points, 98% accuracy, 18th place.

I think I can do better than that.

southeastastra · 11/04/2009 21:21

how do you learn to type so fast :O

roisin · 11/04/2009 21:33

2176 points, 98% accuracy, 7th place
That took about 12 minutes and makes my brain go all peculiar!

roisin · 11/04/2009 21:36

I am a pianist, which helps I think, as my fingers learned to move independently from a very young age.

When I was 16 I started off doing an extra A Level (French) but dropped it pretty quickly as it was too much work. By October half term I was bored, so they suggested I learn typing instead.

This was way back in the days of manual typewriters, real carbon copies, and correcting fluid. So your fingers had to be strong and accurate.

It was certainly the most useful thing I ever learned. I can type pretty much as fast as I can think

southeastastra · 11/04/2009 21:37

did you have a job where you were paid by letter

roisin · 11/04/2009 21:41

I wish

southeastastra · 11/04/2009 21:47

i mostly pick my fingers

HSMM · 11/04/2009 21:54

DD (age 9) uses busy fingers at school
