Novel ideas for school summer fair?

The summer fair is fast approaching and we'll have the usual - bric a brac stall, raffles, cake stall, face painting. Any different ideas that are likely to go down well?

I had a Pampered Chef table at one of them and did apple spirals that went down well with the children as well as the parents!

Hire a mobile climbing wall and bill it as the main attraction.

Sponge the teacher

Beat the goalie.

Cake decorating activity

More info please, if you have any, on the mobile climbing wall and pampered chef.

We had small go-karts at ours last year. They were a great success and are coming again. We also have a BBQ of sausage in a roll and hamburgers. The dads run this as a rule. We've had the fire service bring an engine and the police dog handlers. We have a couple of ponies/small horses from a local stables. We split the profits 50/50 with them. HTH

I found ours by googling mobile climbing wall, and the place we live.
The one we are getting costs £260 for 3 hours.
It comes with 2 qualified instructors and safety rope, helmets etc.
In 3 hours 150 children can get a 6 minute climb.
The children love it.

will run ideas by committee and make enquiries - thanks. ponies would be a hit I'm sure but unlikely to have them nearby in harrow.
keep suggestions coming please.

There is a riding school in Ealing. May also be others not the far away from Harrow?

maypole dancing? or is that against H&S now? I was at a country fair in Hampton Court last year and they were doing it there - it was lovely they had a few grownups showing everyone how to do it (roughly) and gave each child a ribbony headdress to wear.

Everyone could join in, big or small, and the dances didn't last more than 5 mins I suppose.

If not maypole dancing, then get a country dancing calling band in - again, lots of dances, multiple sets so any number can do it at once.

dd's school had maypole dances last year, I think (she wasn't there yet).

We have a wild west theme this year, and are thinking about panning for 'gold', a reservation with face painting and dream-catcher making, and some sort of bouncy castle or giant slide with a WW theme. Plus, the kids love cowboy hats, for some reason

There are some petting not really zoo type things that can bring animals that are safe to be petted - eg goats that can be brushed, guinea pigs and rabbits to cuddle etc... Went to one when ds was 2.4 - ducks, chickens, sheep, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs - and, oh - a tarantula, snakes and a cane toad (particularly when ds decided he wanted to have the tarantula walk over his hand - and as he was so little I had to hold my hand over his so his stayed nice and still - spider got to my hand and decided not to keep on walking Had to 'calmly' say to the owner that it might be a good thing if he could encourage it off now....)

We've had

talent show
bouncy castle
plant stall
barbecue
football comp
craft stall
Pimm's tent (my favourite )
cake competition (best tasting and best decorated, judged by the school cook)

We had a children cocktail stall one year. They could chose a mix of juices or fizzy drinks and/or ice cream floats with a choice of toppings.

maggiethecat · 02/04/2009 01:09

some very nice ideas. esp like the children's cocktails, tho parents would prob like to knock a few back too!
