Are you supposed to sew a name tag into each of your child's socks? (young child)

Are you supposed to sew a name tag into each of your child's socks for school? Talking about a young child who might occasionally get them wet/whatever. I see lots of threads about name tags on MN so I thought I would ask for your wisdom!

If you are supposed to put the names on the socks, how/where do you do it? The whole sock stretches - isn't that going to pull the stitches apart fairly quickly?

I gave up sewing labels many years ago, I use permenent marker on all the things I can write on the labels of, socks quite frankly never even thought of it.

We too have seem to have channelled the god of lost things in our house: water bottles, homework, letters from school, right child to pick up....but socks, nah, as earlier poster said, has always come home with two, even if they're stuffed in bag soaking wet with some odd excuse, they've come home. I reckon it's clothes karma...it always comes round in the end...you'll end up with a lovely bright coloured jumper, even though you have three strangely-not-your-washing-powder polo shirts each term!!

oh bless you crokky, no no no, life is too short to be sewing names into socks.

please don't tell me you iron them, otherwise unfortunately you are destined to name them...

Let them lose socks!

I only do the sports socks and thats cos they are fiendishly expensive

Well about £6 a pair, so thats £3 a sock.

I fold the name tag in half and then just do a few stitches to hold in place on the opening part.

Putting it on the soles makes it uncomfy and the added advantage of the leg means the PE teachers can easily spot who's sock it is.

No - children do not read socks!

I name-tagged DS's in a fit of perfect motherhood when he first went to school, but it didn't stop DS coming home in a wide variety of other people's socks, sometimes left and right would belong to two different friends.

On one memorable occasion he came out from the after school football club wearing one grey sock four sizes too big and one girl's ankle sock - apparently he'd been the last to finish changing and they were the only two socks left!

I remember my mum sewing name tags into all my knickers a few days before I started infant school. I said "I know what that's for Mummy, it's so if somebody asks me my name I can just say look!" and folded over the corner of my knickers I hope she corrected me because I can't remember!

I use iron on name tags on the bottom of socks like some of the other posters, although it's not because I'm bothered about losing them, it's just so they are easy to sort in the laundry as I have 3 boys wearing similar sized grey socks It has been noticed at school that their socks are named, didn't like to disillusion them by telling them it was for my benefit not theirs!

ThePellyandMe · 01/04/2009 09:54

I have never named socks. Neither DS has ever lost a sock, life's too short IMO. Now if naming them would stop them going missing at home I might consider it.

Although there is a notice about items of clothing left in DS1's Y1 class including 1 black sock. I've spent far too long idly wondering how a child comes home with only 1 sock on and doesn't notice

HSMM · 01/04/2009 09:55

I write them on with marker pen, because they do PE in bare feet once a week and DD can never find her socks!

crokky · 01/04/2009 16:00

lol HuwEdwards - no I don't iron socks! In fact the iron is my most hated piece of household equipment and I do not iron anything ever for DS or DD or myself. I do ironing once a month for DH and only if he has worn the item a few times til it is properly dirty before being put in the wash. And he has to beg for ironing. Iron on name tags don't appeal to me for this reason - the iron and the ironing board are such a nuisance, I would prefer to sew or write for labels.

Lots of useful tips on this thread so thanks everyone! I think every piece of uniform was under £10 so I don't have any expensive items that I would be mad about losing.

No don't bother. We must have lost millions judging by the number of odd socks we posess.
I have learned now though to buy a multipack of at least 10 identical socks.
I think a name-taped sock might be a bit uncomfortable anyway.
