spellings and rewards

i havent posted on here before but i have seen the wisdom handed out so i have come for some advise.

My ds1 (age 5) has a spelling test on a friday at school. Depending on which ability group the child is in depends on how many they get. My son is in the top group and gets 8 per week (the next group has 6, then 4 then 2.

If they get them all correct they get a token as a reward. These tokens are then collected each week and on receiving 20 they are given a certificate in assembly.

Tokens can be rewarded for anything at the teachers discreation - but it is mainly for behaviour and spellings is the only achademic thing they do that is rewaded with a token.

My son got his spellings correct this week but did not recieve a token. On asking why he said his writing was not neat enough and he had to write them out again (which i dont have a problem with, hopefully he will learn by that and write neater next time!!). I then asked if he got a token after he had re-writen them and he said no he wasnt allowed.

I think this is unfair and wish to talk to the teacher about it as i feel that the reward is for correct spelling, but i am not sure what to say.

I tend to go very tongue tied in these situations and so was going to send a letter in - also because it is impossable to get to speak with the teacher anyway.

What do you think i should do? Is it unfair? or am i being PFB?

If the teacher stated at the beginning of the test she was looking for good handwriting as well as correct spellings then that is what she would reward

ooooh. Good thought - i will go and quiz him and see if that is what she said

Rewards - you do realise that by now (over 24hrs since the event) your 5yr old will just give whatever answer he feels like as he probably won't even remember what she said now
