Any advice please - dd1 needs help with number recognition....particularly 6 to 10 (!)

So we had our second meet with dd's reception teacher a couple of weeks ago. DD1 is September born and in reception. Her reading is coming on really well - she kows her letter sounds, can recognise the 45 reception words and according to her teacher is probably a bit ahead of where she needs to be for age / stage of the year. We are of course delighted.

Numbers however appear to be a different story. She can count uo a quite high amount, recognises 1 to 5 very easily and can do simple addition and subtraction maths in her head, i.e. if I have 3 and I add 2, what do I have? etc. BUT anything over 5 appears to be an issue. She can't recognise 6, 7, 8, ot nine visually and if we extend the maths to something like 'if I have 6 and I take away one, how many do I have?', she can't do this in her head. She can however easily do it on her hands or if she has objects to count with.

Now I'm not overly concerned with the maths stuff, it's the number recognition that is worrying me more and this is the area that her teacher has asked if we can do some extra work at home on.

So - questions is - should I be concerned about the number recognition and also does anyone have any tips for what we can do at home to help? I have bought some dot to dot books for her to do and we've been playing dinosaur trumps...but I need some extra inspiration.....

I taught DS1 his numbers by drawing little flash cards then telling them they looked liked things he recognised. This will probably sound crazy but-

no 6 - leg kicking a ball
7 - upside down nose
8 - train track number (don't know if she has a train track that looks like this)
9 - arm throwing ball
10 - like in ben 10

Worked for DS1. If this don't for your daughter maybe try and associate them with other things that might! Top trumps are also brilliant for number recognition but looks like you have those already. Good luck.

Good tips gegs73 - thanks for that. I'm also scourering the internet for online stuff she can do on the computer.....

gegs...I like your tips on those numbers, not heard those before!
I would just use a lot of objects with flashcards with the number written on it, so that they can associate what a 6 actually means. I think so many times we forget that they may not have a clue what a number actually means (not saying this is the case in your situation), but IME, this has very often been the case.

Here's a web site that my DDs used for a number of literacy and numeracy topics. There are a few number recognition games, as well as games that help you order numbers, and games to help children understand the 'threeness of three' etc. I tend to have a quick look at each game b4 my girls are let lose on it, just to make sure it's what I want and to make sure I think they'll cope with it - some of the games are a little tricky to get the hang of. Or is that just me??[http://www.ictgames.com/index.html

This is the first time I've inserted a link - I'm a link virgin- so hope it's worked!
