Educational online games for 5yo?

Any good websites out there? The DDs (5 and 3.5y) love the computer and at the moment we're moving into a new house so are letting them spend longer on it than usual. The CBeebies site seems to be getting a bit repetitive - are there any other good ones out there - preferably with an educational slant to make us feel better about it?

I went to a parents workshop last week and DS's teacher (he is 5) gave a list of some websites they use. I will put them on here, but it will be tomorrow or Wednesday.

bbc schools is fab!

In DCs schoool they use Mathletics (school payed the membership and they can play at home as well. here. It is good as it works with your child 's abilities and will become more complicated as your child gets more confident. My dcs love the fact that you can have live math challenges with children from all over the world. It is also fun because you collect ponts with your result and can use them to buy virtual things (clothes...) to your very own Mathletics character.

franch · 23/03/2009 11:42

They both look good MrsR & gorionine - wish DD1's school used that maths site

Maybe you could ask the school to look into it? they might take the same steps as my DCs school. I know that a lot of the school in this area are on Mathletics. It is worth a try!

Starfall.com is great for reading, if you can ignore the American pronounciation! And my DS loves this one - www.poissonrouge.com

Babbity · 23/03/2009 21:58

DS1 loves the BBC Schools website especially the KS1 sciency stuff.

6y DD enjoys using Education City. You have to subscribe though, £30 a year IIRR. You can get free trails though/

franch · 05/04/2009 18:27

Thanks so much - have clicked on quite a few of these and will return to them. DD1 just tried Education City and loved it so I think I'll stick with that till she tires of it!

I bought a box of Educational CD Roms for mine a couple of weeks ago - from PC world. They are excellent - cost equivalent to memebership for two kids with Education City (for one year) whereas my new CDroms are for life ifswim - DS wasnt that keen on Ed city either tbh

Hang on I will try to find a link....

Yurtgirl · 06/04/2009 21:53

these two The two sets together cover preschool to year 6.

franch · 06/04/2009 21:59

Thanks yurt! DD1 enjoying Ed City for now but I'll keep those in mind.

Franch - I liked the way ed city lets the kids know how well they are doing and automatically keeps a record of progress. We had a trial and nearly subscribed but then I forgot!

I was aghast somewhat at paying £30 each year for each of my two kids

What we have now bought cost £60 and contains one extensive cd rom for each year up to year 6 - English, Maths and Science, plus some peppa pig and dictionary type stuff!!!

Woody is a pencil character who guides the kids through - at the end of each activity they get a sticker if they do well and there is a chart showing which parts they have completed (as with Ed city!) Woody talks and cracks jokes

I also like the games available free on the net but find a lot of them very hit and miss.
