My son's school has an urdu club which orginally was designed for non urdu speakers to learn urdu. The class is run by a very kind volenteer and is free.
One problem is, that a lot of children from urdu speaking households have joined the class. Now instead of just doing consversation she is teaching the children to read and write in Urdu. My son is finding this really hard as he cannot speak any Urdu and its putting him off. He is only seven and learning to read and write in English is enough of a challenge.
I can fully understand that Urdu parents want their children to read and write Urdu. However my son is not ready for that. I suppose that in an ideal world, non urdu and urdu speaking children would be in different classes. Its not just my son, the other white children in the class are giving up Urdu as its too difficult.
I am very grateful to the kind lady who takes the class and I am scared of offending her. I am not sure how best to approach the subject.
