My dd is heard reading once or twice a week by her teacher, is this the norm?

twice is about average for us....

ellingwoman · 12/03/2009 17:17

There is no individual reading done at all in our Reception class unless a parent-helper does it.

Reading is taught in daily (differentiated) phonics sessions, daily (whole class) shared 'big book' reading and weekly or twice weekly (differentiated) group guided reading sessions where we work methodically through the specific reading requirements of the level that the group are on.

All the children are issued with colour banded reading books 3 times a week to read at home.

twice a week (rare), usually once a week, often once in 2 weeks. Do "other kind" of reading though in school

Clayhead · 12/03/2009 17:43

Twice a week on his own but daily phonics groups, guided reading sessions about once a week. I can go in and change his books if he finishes them before reading with the teacher.

hedgepig · 12/03/2009 17:43

twice a week is normal for DS1s school too

Feenie · 12/03/2009 19:12

The clue is in the words chosen - children are 'heard' practising their reading skills once/twice a week, but are taught reading skills through different mediums every day - daily phonics sessions, guided groups, shared reading, etc.

careerchangeorsomething · 12/03/2009 19:18

once usually here

Marne · 12/03/2009 19:22

Twice a week.

Heifer · 12/03/2009 19:24

DD reads to her teacher every day and has to read to us every night (set as homework)..

But we are lucky in that she only has 16 in her class so I guess the teacher has more time than most to do this..

electra · 12/03/2009 19:25

Dd2 has 1:1 reading every day.

Hobnobfanatic · 12/03/2009 19:27

Teaching assistant or parent helper listens to all the kids every day, with the teacher listening to each child once a week too. Children have to read each night to their parent/carers too.

Hulababy · 12/03/2009 19:29

DD was listened to individually by her teacher or TA every day in reception. She still is in Year 2 (no TA). It reduces in Year 3 at DD's school.

There are only 14 in the class so it is easier for the teacher to manage.

Nemoandthefishes · 12/03/2009 19:32

Ds school does a lot of group reading/whiteboard work but I think he does 1-1 with the teacher once a week. He reads to us at home every evening.

hewlettsdaughter · 12/03/2009 19:33

Once a week here, afaik.

mumtoone · 12/03/2009 22:09

My ds is heard around once a week. I believe he also does guided reading with his teacher and buddy reading with a child in year 6 once a week.

thecloudhopper · 14/03/2009 18:06

we hear children at least 3 days a week maybe 4. That is because of the staff ratios.

lulu2 · 14/03/2009 18:13

that is brilliant thecloudhopper. wish my dd was listened to that often.

Once a week by teacher (from their current reading book), once a week by teacher or parent helper (high frequency words and/or book), on individual basis.

And as often as possible at home!

smee · 15/03/2009 20:06

Am going to make you all shocked, but in DS's school they don't do hear reading ever in reception, because they start formal reading in final term reception/ year one. It's not that it's discouraged - stacks of books for the children to pick up/ take home, etc and they're read to a lot in groups and do a lot of word play games, etc. Their theory is based on that of many European models where reading is taught at an older age. It has made many of the parents jumpy at DS's school as they didn't realise this before the children started, but tbh the kids all seem happy and are obviously learning masses, so I think for now that it's good. Be interested to know if anyone else's los are in the same sort of system as mine though.

imaginaryfriend · 15/03/2009 21:59

Dd was heard once a week 1:1 and once a week in guided reading. But like everyone else says, there are so many other ways of teaching reading skills during carpet time that I never had a problem with it.

DontCallMeBaby · 15/03/2009 22:57

Seems to be twice a week according to the reading record, possibly three if you include the reading buddy (she has only left a note once, but I think reads with DD once a week). 31 in the class (ouch - took six of them out yesterday, along with two other adults, if I hadn't been in awe of their teacher before, I certainly am now!)

Books get changed about three times a week, we also have quite a few appropriate things to read at home, so do something every day - she also writes us random love notes!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 15/03/2009 23:02

once a week at our school done by teaching assistant

Lizipads · 16/03/2009 09:36
