Cringeworthy parents' evening last night

DD (7) has two teachers (job share) and they were both there. One of them starts by telling me that she's always hearing from DD about all the animals we have at out home. Other teacher gave a funny smile and said "yes X tells me all sorts of things". Oh God, what on earth is she telling them? Do you think she's told them we have trumping contests I can't lok them in the face anymore.

Then I was told off (quite rightly) for the fact she's missed 18% of school. I had no idea it was so much. She's had 2 weeks holiday and was then sick for a week as well. I suppose it sounds worse as she's had the holiday in the first half of the year
and then the sickness hasn't helped. Certainly no more holiday in term time. Was very

Yes, children at that age can blurt out anything can't they.

I suppose the issue about holiday and sickness is an interesting one, though presumably the 18% is of the school year to date and will be 10% or so by the end of the year - provided that she is not ill again.

Sample of what children tell about their parents in school

Enjoy!

My mother was a teacher of small children. I know the sort of things they tell their teachers. I do not like to think what my 5-yo DD1 has told her beloved (rather young) Reception teacher. So far, the teacher has not smirked or laughed outright when she sees me, but surely it's only a matter of time?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 10/03/2009 10:31

Yes, we're half way through the year so if no more sickness it will go down to 9%. If she hadn't a week off sick it would have been 6%. Which doesn't sound so bad, but I see what the teacher's saying. Having missed 18% so far for whatever reason will have affected her learning.

Ah, Stripey, you always need to have a phrase up your sleeve like -

"Well, I'm sure you realise that not everything she says is true.. especially when you consider what I've heard about school ..." accompanied by slight eye-rolling/casual laugh. That'll worry them!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 10/03/2009 10:41

I like that Uriel.

Actually maybe that would have been a good time to have mentioned the teacher's comment when telling the class they can't go to the loo during lessons anymore. According to DD it was "and if you wet yourself I don't care". I should have laughed and told him that I know he'd never say something like that (he did).

Don't worry-I was too ill to take dd in on Friday (chronic d & v), so rang in sick for her too. My dad was picking us up that evening as we were all due to go away for the weekend, so we went anyway as it meant I could be ill in a different place and I had help with dd. She went into school yesterday, and while I was there said to her teacher "I went on holiday this weekend. I didn't come in on Friday as mummy made up a joke that I was ill, but I wasn't. The holiday is a secret though, or mummy will be in trouble". How do I remedy that one?!?!

fircone · 10/03/2009 12:29

Eeek.

That's why it's always so dodgy to lie about a dc being ill. They're not going to be able to resist telling everyone they went to Legoland, Centerpants etc etc. And it sets rather a poor example if you have to prime your dc to lie about having a cold/tummy ache etc etc.

Re your dd spilling the beans, I'd just lie low for a while and try to keep 100% attendance. At least you've already had parents' evening!

fircone · 10/03/2009 12:30

Wait a minute, that's not you, is it? I'm getting confused as to whose dc is telling what to the teachers. (Time for more coffee.)

Pawslikepaddington · 10/03/2009 12:43

I'm not OP, don't worry! It wasn't that we were bunking off to go away, I couldn't leave the bathroom to get her to school, and all of our neighbours attend a different school! It was just co-incidental that we were going away that evening. I cleared it up with school though and they were ok, but I have to fill in a mass of forms!

I've been helping in reception today where one little told me her mum had 'the hormones' today !
