No! I think they're happening over the next term or so but I don't think we get told and I'm quite glad - don't want to know!

Lilyloo · 05/03/2009 20:45

ooh we have had the letter asking / telling us not to take them out of school on a given week due to SATS!

No. It should be totally low key (actually it shouldn't be happening at all).

myredcardigan · 05/03/2009 20:47

I'd check with school. Most good schools do not even mention KS1 SATs with the kids. Therefore, most 7yr olds barely notice anything is going on and maybe unduly worried if you bring it up.

However, if your DS is at one of those mad schools were kids are told, 'this is very important etc...' then I'd talk about themin a matter of fact way saying they're a way for schools to check how the teachers are doing and nothing or him to worry about.

TheFallenMadonna · 05/03/2009 20:47

Hell no. We didn't get told when they were being assessed either. DS blissfully unaware.

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/03/2009 20:48

No. Do nothing at all to alert your DS to the fact that they are taking any tests. No need to stress him out.

And the tests are about the school not the pupil - to see how well the school is teaching their children.

WilyWombat · 05/03/2009 20:48

I probably would when they are older but our school had a policy of not making a fuss at KS1 so they didnt get stressed about it.

LynetteScavo · 05/03/2009 20:48

Heavens no.

Unless you want to help the school look good at your DC's expense.

twinsetandpearls · 05/03/2009 20:49

I wont be doing anything to prepare my dd.

myredcardigan · 05/03/2009 20:50

Hi TSAP! I didn't reply to your CAT as I don't have it set up.

pagwatch · 05/03/2009 20:51

With DS we were never told when he had them. But I wouldn't have done anything anyway.

I expect the same with DD at her school. Actually I am not really sure when she would get them ( I am that interested).

twinsetandpearls · 05/03/2009 20:51

I am confused my red cardigan, what do I need to shake?

roisin · 05/03/2009 20:54

nope

CaptainUnderpants · 05/03/2009 20:54

oh God no ! It is for the schools benefit not your child .

And from experience if they move from a separate infant school to junior school the next school will totally ignore the SATS results the child came with and make their own judgement about the child.

We have been told not to take our kids out of school during the period from after Easter to mid June , however its alright for the school to have two inset days during that time !

myredcardigan · 05/03/2009 20:55

(As in shake hands)
It's what DS says when I've told him off about something!

twinsetandpearls · 05/03/2009 20:56

Oh it is forgotten redcardigan, I hate upsetting people. Took a break and came back refreshed.

Ohforfoxsake · 05/03/2009 20:57

I'm not even going to mention it.

Feenie · 05/03/2009 21:01

There are no 'SAT results' at KS1 any more. The only result which will be reported to you (or anyone) will be the teacher assessment, which is built up slowly over the year from many different sources, one tiny part of which would be the tests. Your ds's teacher will already know exactly where they are and will have already amassed lots of evidence - preparing for the test won't make any difference.

At Y2, the move has been completely away from the emphasis on testing - they still have to be done, but only to support the bigger picture. Pilots are under way to ensure Y6 testing goes in much the same direction any time soon - but KS1 tests have been like this for a few years now.

CaptainUnderpants · 05/03/2009 21:04

But they still test the children and place great emphasis on not taking them out of school. They may not be published like KS2 but schools still like showing them off in their prospectus .

Feenie · 05/03/2009 21:10

That's the teacher assessment figures they have to report, and some show off, not the test figures.

piscesmoon · 05/03/2009 21:28

NO -they do plenty of work in school!

singersgirl · 05/03/2009 21:31

In KS1 they're not all held on the same day, or don't have to be, and there is a big window of time for the actual tests to be administered. So there's no need for there to be a 'SATs week' in KS1. Some children who were ready in our school did the reading test for their Level 3s very early in the period, and others later.

I think some schools are stressing everyone out too much. The school is supposed to be getting children to the right level, not the parents.
