Does This Seem Like A Lot Of Homework

DS was off school sick on Monday so got his homework on Tuesday for the week. It consists of:-
10 Spelling words - test tomorrow,
1 Reading book, to do 17 pages,
A booklet of maths sheets. Double sided. Apparantly to do 1 sheet per night. I only found this out this morning.
Design a book cover.
There's a slip of paper with London Bridge is Falling Down on it and a jotter, he doesn't know what that's for.

He also has another 3 books to help with his reading. There's no note from his teacher in with this lot so I don't know if the page a night of sums is right or what to do with the jotter and the rhyme. We did a page of the maths this morning and it took a good half hour (he's an early riser).

It seems a lot to me and he's only 6. He's had hardle any homework since he got this teacher and now there's a pile.

Yes that sounds like a lot. DD3 is 6 and in year two - she gets one lot of spellings and one short maths exercise per week plus we are supposed to hear her read twice a week.
And

Whoop! And that is quite enough, I was going to add.

DD is in year 1, age 6yo (Swiss school) and she gets two or three short tasks to do a week. This week it was only 2, and no maths so she was finished in just over an hour.

She normally has a book to read but that is voluntary. (We read to her, she cannot read yet)

I don't think I'd mind if there was a timetable in with it telling us what to do and when. We didn't have a chance to do much last night as DS has swimming lessons. By the time we got in from that and had tea, it was 6.30. He goes to bed at 7.30.

For weeks, he's had nothing but spelling words and maybe a reading book. Oh well, best get back to the maths sheets.

I don't think children this age should have any homework at all except reading. I would do nothing until I had talked to the teacher in the morning so that I was sure exactly what he was supposed to do, and then I would say "well, ds will do what he can, but he goes to bed at 7.30, he needs time for tea and playing and a bath and a bit of TV, so it may not be much!" He's 6 - this is ridiculous!

I have been talking to a work colleague today about her daughter at a local private prep that we are considering. She has 1 & 1/2 hrs homework a night (3 subjects) plus book to read and spellings once a week. She is 6-7. I was shocked as this seems a vast amount for one so young? She is a bright spark too, so clearly is not taking ages because she is struggling. I agree with seeker!

ICANDOTHAT · 06/03/2009 08:01

Is he in a private school?

MollieO · 06/03/2009 08:52

Does sound a lot. My ds gets a 12 page reading book four nights a week and that is it. He is 4 and in reception and just has to read the book he has already read in school that day so easy for him. Sounds like a huge leap up for year 1. I would expect just reading and spelling at that age. Ds is at pre-prep and I know he wouldn't be getting any homework if he was in reception in our local state school. I thought they were only supposed to have about 10-15 mins homework per night in year 1.

Hulababy · 06/03/2009 14:42

Sounds like way too much.

DD is 6y and in Y2. This week's homework is:

Monday - spellings (8 words with ai in them)

Tuesday - reading (6-8 pages; if they want to read more - read own book)

Wednesday - do a sketch of your mummy (needed for art lesson day after)

Thursday - Given a list of 10 numbers and for each one needed to write two division facts (eg. 20 ... 20 / 4 = 5; 20 / 2 = 10)

Friday - They have been studying a place called Gujarat. They needed to write a list of items they might need if visiting, and say why.

Our homeworkk can normally be completed within 10 minutes and that is more than enough IMO.

Hulababy · 06/03/2009 14:44

We get a homework diary sent home every night. The teacher sticks a printout of the homework for the week in every Monday.

Hulababy · 06/03/2009 14:45

Oh, forgot to add. I work as a TA in a Y1 class and they don't get any official homework at all. theya re supposed to chose a reading book from the colour appropriate box int he classroom and read that; but there is no requirement to change books every day or anything.

gscrym · 06/03/2009 20:06

ICANDOTHAT - No, it's a normal state primary and we're in Scotland.

One thing that's been bugging DH is DS has been getting research homework. The other P2 class has things like write 3 things about the sky, pick your favourite animal and write 3 things about it. DS's research has been find out the following about the Falkirk Steeple - when was it built, what is it made of, what was it's purpose, find out 5 facts about pyramids - why were they built, what were they for, what was special about their shape. The peach was to research Sarcophagus. It's okay for kids who have access to computers but not everyone has this. Also, the parents need to do the homework and then the kids write it out.

It's parents night in a couple of weeks. I'll be having a long talk with his teacher.

My dd yr 3 - has brought one sheet of maths in the whole year, finished in around 5 minutes. THAT IS IT SO FAR.....She reads well above her age so teacher not bothered and I just take some interesting books{she comes tochoose} from local council library. Also gets some books now and then from school library if she likes the book.I am a bit worried regarding this as all other children get some work or the other. Meeting the school teacher at the parents evening next week. Might bring this issue
