Mine started at Ashley Down (Bishopston) which is one of the more successful primary schools in Bristol and I whipped him out and into a private school asap.
I would think about moving nearer South Gloucester or North Somerset if I were you.

PussinJimmyChoos · 04/03/2009 20:27

Really? Are the schools that much better there??

If you're in Downend/Staple Hill you're in South Gloucestershire anyway - but Fishponds is Bristol. The schools in Downend, Staple Hill, Emersons Green are all reasonably good. Emersons Green school and Mangotsfield school (in Emersons Green as well!) are both oversubscribed, but there's loads of choice in Downend - Stanbridge, Christchurch, Bromley Heath, St Augustine's (Catholic). Staple Hill got good SATS last year, and the Tynings (also in Staple Hill) got good Offsted.

North Bristol is pretty good - any of the Henleaze/Westbury Park/Horfield/Westbury-on-Trym/Elmlea/Stoke Bishop/Bishop Road schools are good. I've heard bad things about Sefton Park, good things about Hotwells, Colstons, St Johns, St Peter and St Paul, Our lady of the Rosary (Catholic though, if that's a consideration).

I think the main thing is to look round a few schools, don't go too much on the Ofsteds, but go with a school that has the right feel. They all have different strengths - for example Henleaze gets fantastic results, Horfield is very strong on music, Colstons has amazing play equipment (obviously v superficial comments but yswim!).

St Augustines is good too.

Arggh, no way would I be sending my PFB to any filton schools! lol

We own our house so...blimey, its a lot to think about isn't it! DH's workmate actually moved so her DD1 could get into a good school and she has - some private one and the mum is really pleased...

Maybe private primary is the way to go...hmm

I concur about the Stoke Bishop /Henleaze / Westbury Park etc schools being good - the dcs play football with children from those schools and the parents and children are nice. That said others I have met can be a bit snobbish and very 'alpha mum' so maybe it is only the football crowd

If you are thinking about private the best school IMO is Clifton High school, fabulous pastoral care and the teachers are brilliant. It is more mixed socially than most of the state schools above and there is absolutley no snobbishness etc. They have just turned co-ed in the senior school now too alho teaching the children separately in core subjects (maths, english, science etc) and together in 'humanities'(history, geog etc)
