Hi, My DD was given some sort of test yesterday at school - she is in year 1. It was held in a room set up with separate desks. All I have been told about it was it was some sort of IQ test, this was only when I asked about it. Anyone else heard of this?

sounds very odd - never heard of IQ tests being done in school.

I spoke to my sister who was a primary teacher and she hadn't heard of it before. This is a state primary school not independant so I am pretty surprised, just wondered if it was something new that has been introduced.

We used to get the same bloody test every year at the end of the school year.

It was a simple 'woof is to dog as meow is to ......'. Very odd. Never did find out what it was all about. Definately the same 40 questions every single year.

Not something I have heard of (student teacher) anyway I don't really think IQ tests tell you much about a person's true intelligence - there is a knack to the tests which I am good at hence I score quite highly but I am really not that bright tbh

Could it have been some kind of multiple intelligences test to find out where each child excells in order to figure out how best to teach them? That might make more sense.

These tests are usually used as a way of spotting under-performing children versus their base intelligence level. Nothing to worry about per se but they definitely should tell you what it's all about.

Thanks for your replies it does make sense, the teacher did mention the word Mist, but didn't know what it stood for. I agree that they should tell us about them as I didn't like the thought of my DD in exam conditions - she's far too young to be tested!

I've never heard of this before and I'm sure dd hasn't been tested like that so far in Y1.

morningsun · 03/03/2009 23:58

i was told they did a reasoning style test to find low scores that would "raise alarm bells"iq wise
all the children in school were tested

imaginaryfriend · 04/03/2009 00:07

Is it possible to find out what the test consists of?

mist = middle infant screening test
scroll down

I did ask my DD what sort of things were on the test it seemed to be literacy rather than numeracy and some comprehension - such as matching a sentance to a picture. They also had to write down more than 10 words in 5 minutes and write down words read out to them. Thats all she could remember about it.

Looked up middle infant screening and it looks like that is it. It was the SEN co-ordinator who ran the session with them so I guess she is looking for pupils she needs to work with.

I was just a bit surprised that they haven't given us any info either before or after the test.

I did ask some of the other parents but they were unaware it took place, I think their children are as forthcoming about what happens at school, or their interrogation techniques aren't as productive!!

i had similar story last yr was a bit worried he'd gone to the senco for some reason but every child went it is apparently a screening for difficulties
