Literacy levels year 2

My son is 6 years old, and is in Year 2. Three weeks back, his teacher was telling me that she is concerned about his literacy. He was good at numbers though. He just had an assessment last week, and has come up with level 1A in writing, and 2C in reading. I know that these are not great results. What is the best way to help him positively. Has anybody had any experience like this where literacy skills have improved in later years. Did you do anything special to improve the skills?
Thanks !

I'm no expert - this is just my experience with one ds and one dd...

My ds's reading took off when he found something he enjoyed reading. A clever friend bought him a M&S Joke book aimed at his age and it lit his touch paper. That was Xmas Y2. He could read things to amuse him and us/his friends.

Keep reading to him yourself too - and your dh. Have him see you both reading for pleasure.

Re writing, ds Y4 teacher set them Easter hols homework to write a diary for a week. That really motivated him - our first trip abroad. Spelling and punctuation all to pot (only just resolving in Y7!) but he loved it. Again, it's catching their imagination.

Like you say - keep positive and keep encouraging. All the best!

Hi,

Try not to worry, hard i know

What did the teacher suggest?

Does he get to do any small group work, ELS, etc?

How are his phonic sounds? Can he blend these sounds?

How is his fine motor control? Workbooks/sheets/homemade sheets that have wiggly lines/shapes can help this.

His teacher (who hopefully is supportive) should be your first port of call. Try not to worry and be really supportive of his efforts. I TA a small group of children who struggle in this area, and repetition using different methods really does pay off.
