Recommendations for a good childrens dictionary (KS1 on cusp of KS2)

Dd's reading is at long last coming together. She is 6.7 and in Year 2, and in the last few weeks she is becoming much more fluent and confident at reading. Her spelling is a pretty rough though!

I'm going to try to get her to write more often in the hope that this will improve her spelling (perhaps a short diary page every day). I would like to give her a dictionary as a tool to encourage her to look up and check spellings. Any recommendations please?

We use the collins first dictionary in my class (KS1). I find it to be a great one as it is user friendly for their age range, and has pictures as well

Thanks melissa for the recommendation - always good to have the advice of a teacher....

Go for the Jolly Phonics dictionary - it's designed to help with spelling.

We have the jolly phonics dictionary - my boys loved it. Ds1 used to read it for fun!

I am an atroutiouse atrousious(!) speller and someone once bought me a dictionary for bad spellers which was great, because if you cant spell you cant look up the word. This way I could find the word and they would break down the correct spelling and then it would stick in my mind. Not sure of the name , possibly bad spellers dictionary or if it is to grown up for her but thought I would mention it.

dc have the Oxford Children's Colour Dictionary. There are a few pages at the back with labelled pictures of the face , trees and flowers, musical instruments etc.
