What, in layman's terms, are they expected to be able to do in numeracy in Y1?

I've looked at various websites but to be frank I'm rubbish at maths and I don't know what they're on about.

Could anyone tell me, just roughly, what they're expected to achieve during Y1 in maths?

I'm asking because dd says she's finding it quite hard and I wondered what kind of things I could work on with her to help her.

She can do her 2, 5 & 10 times tables. She can add numbers fairly easily up to 10, struggles up to 20 and is totally confused about subtraction.

Did you speak to her teacher, imaginaryfriend?

I do feel for your dd - it is hard and a bit frightening when you are verbally way ahead but more like average mathematically - everyone assumes you can do both... Subtraction - try tangerines. Count the pigs (segments) and let her eat one and count again, eat one and count again etc. I remember doing this - it helped me gain confidence, in that I knew what the answer would be since it was an easy sum, and it helped me to see the physical difference.

Playing Snakes and Ladders is supposed to be good for maths skills too, though she sounds way ahead of this basic stuff.

I didn't speak to the teacher as dd didn't want me to.

I think she's just quite baffled by numbers. If she tries to count 6 onto 6 by using her fingers she forgets how many fingers make 6 when she's half way through the sum!
