Dd seems to really like doing a few sums / spellings online but has got a bit bored with the few websites I've found so far and I wondered if anyone could recommend any others?

I didn't pick her up. I laughed because she was talking about spelling, and made a mistake doing it. I even added a fricking smiley to show I was joking. Then Melissa had a fit, instead of taking it with good grace (blush emoticon, perhaps? We've all made mistakes, that's what it's there for.)
Since when is it okay for a teacher to launch in with 'I bet your(sic) the kind of parent who.....', get ridiculously personal, for the poster then to defend herself and get lambasted?
What's that about?
Like I said, genuinely baffled shakes head

ramonaquimby · 02/02/2009 22:48

is melissa a teacher?

Thomasandhisfriends · 02/02/2009 23:05

Apparently, yes.

melissa75 · 08/02/2009 14:21

I am pleased with mumsnet response on this thread...or the last little bit of it anyway!

melissa75 · 08/02/2009 14:27

ramonaquimby..yes I am a teacher, and I entirely agree with you, this is a posting blog, and it is amazing how many people pick apart the grammar and spelling of posts...makes you wonder why they do not have anything better to do with their time
and thomasandfriends, why on earth would I take your response "with good grace"? I find it interesting the other posters on here have agreed with me...yet noone seems to see your POV. Perhaps it might be time to apologise?....haha, like that'd ever happened!!
I am glad that Mumsnet took my report seriously and deleted both your post, which was disgusting having to resort to swearing, as well as deleting my post which I also asked them to do.

maggiethecat · 08/02/2009 22:56

I'm old school and whilst everyone makes mistakes in their posts I do get annoyed by teachers who cannot spell as evidenced by repetitive mis-spelling. Big peeve of mine is when newsletters come home referring to children practicing.

That said, I'd rather have the valuable information that Melissa provided, spelling mistake and all, than not have it - so thank you.

melissa75 · 09/02/2009 19:40

maggie...your welcome...
ironically, I agree with you, I think that if a newsletter is sent home from a school or for that matter, anything sent from anywhere, whether it be a business or anything professional should not have any spelling mistakes in it, as it does not show a professional image, however in a discussion forum such as this one, I think spelling really is irrelevant!

Feenie · 09/02/2009 21:30

Evidently!

VanillaPumpkin · 09/02/2009 21:37

Feenie.

Melissa - Thomas was only having a chuckle, hence the emoticon. There is a pedant's corner on MN. It is sort of part of the place. It wasn't personal. Made me anyway.
I thank you for the links too. Very useful.

Feenie · 09/02/2009 22:02

I think Thomas was joking, there was a grin next to her post, and your spelling was quite funny, Melissa.
On the point that spelling is irrelevant on here - I think that it's important to have high standards regardless of where you write. I wouldn't talk about finances on here and use questionable numeracy skills because it's 'only' a forum. I think it's sad when teachers say spelling is 'irrelevant' anywhere.
So says a Literacy co-ordinator, I suppose!

melissa75 · 10/02/2009 19:21

guess there's always one in every crowd...or maybe two or three...

Feenie · 10/02/2009 20:50

One what?

VanillaPumpkin · 11/02/2009 14:19

Eh?

imaginaryfriend · 12/02/2009 11:10

Oy! Let's get back to the point - good websites still required please!

throckenholt · 12/02/2009 11:12

www.starfall.com/ - quite good for reading - if you don't mind the American accents

imaginary...hope they are useful! If you delve a little further into some of them, there are some fab activities on them!

imaginaryfriend · 12/02/2009 21:27

Yes, there are, I'm quite enjoying them myself!

mum2twinboys · 13/02/2009 20:31

melissa75, thanks for the great links. We used the abc.net.au one tonight. My boys loved the activities on there. A great motivator for them. I had a go at some of the activities as well, we all enjoyed them!
