Hi. Has anyone seen the film prince of egypt? My 8 year old watched it at school and she didn't want to go to bed last night in case the Angel of Death came for her. I was surprised when I looked it up this morning to find that it is a Disney animated film so it's obviously aimed at children - or is there another version? She does scare quite easily but surely a Disney film can't be scary. Can anyone shed any light? (I've left a message for her teacher to call me btw)

Disney films have almost all got at least one terrifying scene imo.

IMO there is no knowing what might scare an individual. Things that look perfectly innocuous to me and to my 8yo ds are too strong for my 12yo dd.

At your dd's age I hid a stamp album because it contained a stamp featuring a mummy case from the British Museum. Nothing scary about the picture, but I knew there had been a dead person inside the case. Also scared to look at a page in my history book because it had a Stone Age skeleton in it. So I'm sure an actual Angel of Death would have terrified me. But almost certainly not had any effect on the other 24 children in the class. Some people are just sensitive.

You can reassure her and teach her tricks to guide her thoughts away from scary things at bedtime, but not a lot else you can do IMO.

But unless the film is obviously unsuitable, there is probably only so much you can do about what she watches at school.

ahhh-it's the plague one...with moses...it isn't nice...children dying...but a bible story.

There is also drawing of baby boys being thrown into the river..with crocodiles at the bottom.

I used to have to fast forward the part in the Lion King when the Dad dies for my DD, she hated it!

I think a few of the Disney films can be pretty scary especially the older ones

Plus that particular bible story is quite a nasty one anyway.

Not what the teacher could do here - our Reception teacher had a parent complain about her reading Jack in the Beanstalk, once - giant too scary.
Best advice is the previous poster who said you could try and teach your dd how to deal with being scared - it's too much to expect nothing ever to scare her!

Prince of Egypt isn't Disney but it is a U-rated animation. Dd has it at home and was fine with it, she's 6 and does get freaked out by scary stuff at times. She was aware it was a 'serious' film and had lots of questions to ask me.

You can't really complain about it though as it's not gratuitous or offensive in any way. Plus as so many people have said all kids will be scared of something and there are always serious moments / issues in kids films.

I was utterly terrified of the bad queen in Sleeping Beauty - the one with the big two-horned hat. But that's considered a Disney classic and dd's seen it at school once or twice.

Thanks guys. I have spoken to her teacher now. She said no-one had ever called to complain before and she's been showing it for a long time. I told her I wasn't really calling to complain but more to find out about it and let her know the situation in the hope that she can help (as I haven't seen the film so don't really know what to say to reassure her). She is going to have a chat with my dd to try and reassure her.

My 7 year old ds is a complete wimp when it comes to films. I warn his teacher every year so that she is aware. He likes to sit near the teacher whenever they watch a film in case he needs to hide (they watched Peter Pan before Christmas and apparently he spent most of it on her lap!)

mankyscotslass · 16/01/2009 20:35

My DS 6 watched this last year at school and was up every night for a week crying with nightmares. He thought the Angel of Death was real.
We ended up telling him the story of moses ourselves, and also bought a Dream Catcher for his room, and it settled down.
I totally sympathise.
