My daughter is 6 (early Sept birthday) and is in Y1, and is in a mixed Y1/Y2 class. Since the beginning of the year she has been in a group doing Y2 spellings, which as far as I can see, she has coped just fine with (averaging 9/10, 10/10 each week).

So at the end of week 1 of term 2, the spelling list she has brought home has reverted back to words like "the, that, she" etc, which she can spell with barely a thought. When I asked her, she said she had been moved to an easier group (which just happens to have her best friend in it!), but didn't know why.

I had a quick chat with her teacher this morning and it turns out that when asked, my daughter had said she found 1 or 2 words difficult each week, so they have moved her down a group as a result.

I told the teacher that as far as I am concerned, I am confident that each Friday morning she can spell all the words given and the teacher is happy to move her back up.

So, my question (finally!). Do I leave her in a much easier group with the distraction of her best friend where I know she will be happy to coast along, or do I insist she is moved back to the harder group where I know she is capable of the work, but has to put a little effort in?

What do spellings involve for goodness sake? Ours DCs are given a list to bring home each week, they learn them and are tested. How is being in the same group as her friend going to help/hinder. I'd put her back into the higher level group if she wasn't struggling there.
