AM in Hants. Just wanted to get an idea before we ditch the school ones which are very cheap but not really designed to provide beyond 'taster'.

How long does a private lesson last?

We pay £30 for 45 mins (pay in blocks of 10 lessons).

That's central London so probably higher end of rates. Piano teacher comes to us - which probably also ups the rate a bit.

In East mids we pay £16.50 per 30 min private lesson.

Jux · 07/01/2009 16:18

In Devon it can be £10 for half hour, or less if the teacher's not very good.

Seeline · 07/01/2009 16:21

south London I pay £15 for 30 mins on a weekly basis

procrastinatingparent · 07/01/2009 16:23

Surrey:
£16 for 30 minutes.

Bramshott · 07/01/2009 16:27

You'd want 30 mins at age 9 I think. I am in Hants and would expect to pay about £15 for 30 mins I think.

Bramshott · 07/01/2009 16:27

Clearly I think too much!

WilfSell · 07/01/2009 16:28

We have 'private' lessons at school at 11 quid for 20 mins.

BoffinMum · 07/01/2009 16:34

I'm a registered ISM teacher and I charge £40 a hour and kids that age have 20 or 30 mins depending on what stage they are. I do get good results though, if I say so myself.

roisin · 07/01/2009 18:31

Crikey
We pay £10 for 30 mins - this is oop north though where property is cheap and salaries are generally lower!

Hulababy · 07/01/2009 18:34

dd has just started, £7.50 per half hour, Northamptonshire.

BoffinMum · 07/01/2009 19:57

Some of these rates seem very low ... are these teachers qualified etc etc?

Yes but at least you know you're less likely to get a cowboy. But teaching talent is a different skill, I agree.

Sounds like you have got yourself a real bargain there though, Riven.

scienceteacher · 07/01/2009 20:05

We have peri lessons at school and it is £190 per term, for 30 minute lessons once a week, so around £16 per half-hour.

didn't lessons used to be free for children?

Hulababy · 07/01/2009 20:10

In what way qualified? Which qualifications would you look for?

DD's tutor works for a group of tutors and their fees are within the ISM guidelines (according to their website) - links to this document

I am a piano teacher and charge for half an hour £12 (in NW Kent) regardless of age and ability.
