Points given in Reception

Hi there

I know that all Reception children were given a Base Line Assessment at the end of their first term and this was discussed with me at a parents evening at the beginning of November.

However, I found out from 3 different mums over the Christmas break that all the children had been given points in different subjects and that class average points had been set for different subjects.

I was not told what points had been allocated to my child or about class average points. I find it odd that some parents were given this information and others, like myself, were not.

Does anyone know anything about these points? Were you all given your child's points after their base line assessment?

Thanks

M

We have had none of this - points or base line assessment.

DS2 started reception in September and took his EY stuff from Nursery to school with him so I know what he is capable of (I knew anyway) so I am not bothered about the base line assessment.

We had parents evening at the end of the first half term and the teacher outlined what he had achieved and he is making progress so I am not really bothered about anything else.

If it is important to you I would just ask. I am not sure how much you will get out of it as there is such a huge difference in age and experience at the start of school that any average is a bit meaningless. I would think it is more relevant further up the school.

Sorry - too many i'm not bothered in that last post. Sounds really awful.

What I mean is that I know where DS was, I know where he is now so how they chose to quantify and label it is not really relevant to me. I am very bothered about his education obviously.

Perhaps the teacher is still working her way through the class but we only had an evaluation of the Foundation Stage at the end of the year. Presumably it is the assessments based on the Early Learning Goals scales (0-9) and they would take snapshots during the year as well as the start and end.

Hi there

Thanks for you responses. The mums who know their children's points were given them at the parents evening, so I know it is not a case of the teacher working her way through everyone.

I think the issue for me is not just about what points he has, as I am proud of what he has achieved since starting in September. It's also an issue of why some people are given this information and others aren't - I think either all of us or none of us should have been given details of the points and what they mean. Some of the mums seem to know everything about everything tbh !

I have decided I would like to know his points and the class average and have popped a note in his book asking the teacher if she can make them transparent to me.

Thanks again

M

maybe some of the parents asked for specifics and you , and perhaps others, didn't think to.

You are probably right LIZS, we did not ask whether he was average, above or below. And, knowing a lot of the mums, others would definately have asked this

I suppose on the night, being our first parents evening, we were nervous and unsure of what to expect. I am sure it will get easier over time.

Thanks again

M

They probably asked.

I've noticed that at ds's school, the parents who know everything are the ones who also have older children at the school, so they know what things are done when iyswim, and so they know what to ask for at parents evening.
