Hi, I am new to this board and being in Scotland, I can't follow some of the threads as I don't know what the comparable classes are?!
What is reception year, how old are the kids? What age are they then into Yr 1?
In Scotland, kids usually do a year of pre-school or nursery (often run by parents and not at a school, ie in the village hall etc)then go into school Primary 1 (P1) between the ages of 4.5 and 5.5 depending on birth month.
Thanks,

Reception is for children aged 4-5. They will turn 5 in that year.

Year one is the following year. They are 5 when they atart, and turn 6 during it.

P1 is reception
and the last year of primary here is year 6 which is P7 in scotland..HTH

Children start school in Reception from the September before they turn 5.

Y1 is the year (from Sept) that they all turn 6

reception starts the school year they are 5. So many start at 4yo (e.g. if you were born 31st Aug you would start very soon after your 4th birthday).
Y1 is the year after that so 5-6yos.

Preschool starts at 3 so depending when child is born they may do 1 or 2 years.

Generally start Reception the September after their fourth birthday (in a few areas children born later in the year will start in the January instead). Then go up to Y1 the September after their fifth birthday. Some will do preschool or nursery before starting Reception, some won't.

Mumsnet overview here.

I am Scottish but live in England.

My ds was 5 on 6th December.

Nursery (started Sept he would have been 4 in the Dec)
Reception (started this Sept, 5 in Dec)
Yr 1 (Sept 2009, so 5 going on 6)
Yr 2 (Sept 2010, so 6 going on 7)

Reception is like nursery but with more emphasis on learning through play. There are still toys etc in the classroom.

Our school only has one intake in September.

I've recently moved to Scotland (from England) and am surprised at the extent of the differences!

Reception is for children who have turned four by the end of August, so you get children who are aged from just turned four to nearly five.

P1 is for children who have turned five by the end of August.

Preschool is (generally) funded for 5 x 2.5 hour sessions a week, starting the term after your child turns three.

There is no deferral system similar to the one in Scotland. If you don;t want your only-just-turned-four-year-old to start reception when they are so young, you are given the option to let them miss the Reception year, and go into P1 the following year (where they would still be one of the youngest!).

I hope I've got that all right! I'm sure someone will be along to correct me if not.

God I'm so sloooow

Thanks everyone, such quick replies, so basically Reception is equivalent to our P1 so I need to go back a year to compare my kids classes to English.
