Hi, i have a rising 6 yo child (been at school for 1.5 years) currently starting level 4 in this system. I cannot find any other schools using this system as my friends children all use Oxford Learning Tree. I just wandered if this was average for a 6 year old and how the levels would equate to approx ages. She hasn't been the quickest to pick up reading and I was just concerned in case she seemed behind.

My nearly seven year old is on Level 6 (but can read a lot better; she's going at the speed of the rest of the class- that's another thread altogether). So, I would say level 4 is about right.

Does it have a blue cover or a blue back? If so it is within the 'normal' range for 5 - 6 year olds.

Ginn Level 4 is approximately equal to a 1a (and ORT Stage 6) - which is where an average Y1 child (no such thing!) would be by the time they leave Y1 in July. So it sounds like your dd is doing very well.

Ginn Level 4 have green covers.

Is anyone able to tell me what ORT stage is a Ginn Level 8 (blue back), thanks

Tinkerbel6 · 15/12/2008 18:46

or it could be purple

DD's school uses these books as part of their rerading strategy.

DD is 6y8m (Y2) and has finished Level 9 Ginn. She can actually read beyond thi but school work through their scheme pretty well in order to expand vocab and bredth of reading styles, etc. There are a number of children in her class on Level 6. There are some blow this level also.

Same as my DS, just coming to the end of Ginn level three, he'll be six at end of January. I'm quite happy with that, level three is a really hard level to master with tonnes of new words. Your DS should move pretty quickly once on level four and start reading a greater range of non scheme books.

Feenie · 16/12/2008 22:07

Ginn Level 8 (which is blue ) is roughly equivalent to ORT stage 11.

Every child is different and there should be no reason to compare levels with other kids. A teacher's nightmare is parents putting on the pressure to 'whizz' their kids through the levels because it puts the kids off if they find it hard. A majority of kids go on to be perfectly good readers regardless if they are 'average' anyway so relax and enjoy the pace that the teacher sets for your kids.
