Friends of dd's got into their present school because their mother is dying and this school offered special counselling- would this be social?

Think it can be used by families who are moved into areas by councils for difficult reasons, like children of mothers who go into refuges etc
I also know of a family who had an adopted child who didn't want her to go to school in the area she was adopted from, so they managed to use this to get a place in a school a few miles away.
This criteria is one of the most difficult to use to get a school place.

IME social needs can cover a range of family situations - but would mostly be children and families who are known to social services because of challenging social circumstances, but not necessarily deemed to be at risk.

My mother says that siblings having had issues with a previous school also counts.

A child in DS's class is there because he/she was adopted quite late in her life, v disturbed, and it was felt that a small school would provide a stable environment.

They had to have back-up from the social worker to say so.

young carers, that sort of thing?

A child at our school got priority for a nursery place because her father had cancer and so the mum was under pressure.

Child who are on the at risk register or who are under the care of a social worker.

Some children with SEN issues.

We have two children at our school who came into the area because their mother was relocated by a womens hostal. They got priority too.

Also one of the reasons we gave for dd's appeal was the social difficulty of having an invisible disability, and the emotional damage she had sustained from being doubted by her previous school + the medical profession; we therefore argued that she needed to go with her friends who knew about her situation and could speak for her.
