My dd1 has just started reception in Septmber. There are 60 kids in Reception, 2 classes of 30 but it is open plan and they do interact together. They have been put into 6 groups with about 10 pupils in each. They all have a colour and an animal name. Are they in a sort of set according to their ability at this age, or is it just for admin or some other reason?

Could be either reason. Some schools have ability groups at this stage, other do it just to make it easier to organise the class activities.

Only way to know for sure is to ask.

Otherwise actly all sly in the classroom and judge who is sat where compared to work on th ewalls....or, if you see what some MNetters do - invite some children for playdares and read their reading record books

IN ds school they have sets of friendship groups and ability groups,so the ability groups for literacy/phonics and numeracy and the friendship groups for other stuff .

So ds was in a fruit group and an animal group and specific phonics group.

Go in and ask.

Dd's school is very similar to yours. Her class was split into 5 groups which were definitely based on ability although they were quite fluid with various changes throughout the year.

Have you had a parents evening yet? If you've already had one and didn't mention it, pop your head in one afternoon and ask - they usually have more time after the kids have left.

My dc's reception have groups, all based on ability. They were assessed within the first 2 weeks of being there.

The teacher didn't discuss this 'grouping' with me, but I know her TA and she was very open about it.

Thanks,I will ask. I'm amazed the kids are in ability groups already, though I'm sure the kids are not aware.

10 children sounds a bit too many for an ability group. You couldn't give all the children individual attention in the time allocated.

Don't be surprised at ability groups in Reception though. Although there is a lot of play we have groups for literacy, guided reading, phonics and numeracy.

I asked one of the TAs today, as she was dismissing the kids, and she said they are ability groups - two top ones, two middle ones and two bottom ones.

Oh don't worry ... it won't take long for some twatty parent to let their darling child know that they are in the 'top' group and all the others are 'THICK' ... you wait
