Can anyone enlighten me about the protocol for Christmas cards. My daughter has just started Reception and is getting a few cards now. Do people give them to the whole class or just the few that their daughter/son names? What do other people do?

The whole class.

when dd was in reception she decided who she was going to do cards for - so just a handful

ClutterJunkie · 04/12/2008 21:54

if you ask the teacher- she will give you a list of the class register.

i think in reception...they do tend to give one to everyone else...but cheat here a bit...only write the recipents name on the envelope.... and just get your DC to write own name inside card.......if this is too hard for him/her...get them to write over yellow felt pen- like they do in class.

by yr2 my boys were fed up of writting cards...and reduced down to just the few special freinds they had!!!

How do you find out the names of the whole class? Do you ask for a class list?

Has been whole class but this year my DCs school asked that each child bring in one card for their whole class and a charity donation. I think this is a much better idea rather than parents having to supervise the writing of c30 cards per child. Still nothing to stop children writing cards to special friends

sorry, I just got your reply

i just think that in reception year it is very sad when the 'postman' comes to the class and hands out the cards...and some get none!!!

(whats written in them is irrelavent... they just love getting the envelope and opening it!!!)

ramonaquimby · 04/12/2008 22:00

agree cat64

dd is even getting some (preschool) where the child hasn't touched them - not even a squiggle to 'write' their name if they can't - just 'To XXXX Love XXXX' all written by (presumably) mummy

designergirl · 04/12/2008 22:02

Is there a "postman?" I just thought the children sent them in their book bags.

i always made my boys contribute on the cards...that is why i think they gave up in yr1 sending them to everyone- they saw they had to graft away!!!

ClutterJunkie · 04/12/2008 22:04

at our school they all put them in a post box by reception...then the cards are sorted into classes- then handed out after lunch

DS is in 1 of 2 Reception classes with an open plan layout so plays equally with children from both classes (in fact seesm to get on better with children from the "other" class). I'm putting off writing 60 cards (well 59, if you take out DS) but know if I ask him for a list of his closest friends the list I get today will be totally different from the list I get tomorrow.
I see how much DS likes getting his cards though, so think it is worth the effort.

christywhisty · 05/12/2008 09:30

DC's always to the whole class and I always made them sign them even in reception.
However this year they are trying an eco card. No cards but the class make a huge card and they all write a message in it. DD is still going to get cards for her friends though and send them out of school.

Thanks everyone, that helps a bit, lol. I've got 3 kids, it's gonna be fun when they're all in school. I bought a stamp this year with " love from ... "and our names. I'm going to get my eldest (5 yr old) to stamp all our cards, she'll love that. Then I just have to write who they're to and a short message. Anything to simplify our busy life!
