Can anyone point me to a good site that explains the newer way of teaching division & muliplication. I do realise that this may soon no longer be the recommended way but was trying to discribe it to a friend over the phone! Sure I sure it on a school website but now I can't find it.
Thanks.

BBC

Try the Key Stage sites (google them). I was always pretty savvy when it came to maths and science but the new methods of teaching are a bit confusing aren't they!
Just key (no pun intended) in KS where is the stage. Probably KS1??

It's been a blessing for my DS's KS3 maths (and science).

I am afraid I can't do links! Google Leicestershire maths, click on homepage. From there choose Maths subject leaders, then click parents evening calculation presentation. This shows some of the common mistakes and how the newer methods avoid them. Is aimed at upper Key Stage Two but still very informative.

I have just been to a very interesting evening class at my DS's school aimed at parents to tell them all about the new methods etc. I am now an expert on chunking!

goldilocksandmylittlebear · 26/11/2008 22:08

I have been teaching my Year 3's today.

Have a go at dividing smarties between several cups to show 5 lots of 3, put 5 cups on the table with 3 smarties in each, discuss how this is also 15 divided by 5 etc etc.

Have I explained this clearly?

Children should see multiplication as the inverse of division etc. 'lots of' share equally etc.

blametheparents we've also had one of those meetings - I can now Chunk with the best of them .

SlartyBartFast · 27/11/2008 22:55

i couldnt chunk, not that i wanted to

nix66 · 28/11/2008 11:46

Thanks again Piscesmoon, the BBC Skillswise website was just what I needed.... (lots of chunking there for you experts!)

They can also see multiplication as repeated addition.

"Mathematics explained for primary teachers" by Derek Haylock is an excellent book for parents as well - it's aimed at primary teachers who may not have been very confident at maths when they were at school and it re-explains all the key concepts with examples and also why certain things are taught they way they are. Well worth getting I would say - it's become our maths bible when we're trying to make sense of ds's homework and work out why something is being done in a way that seems strange to us!
