DS was scored 82/117 at the end of his year at reception. He is now in Yr2. We have just been told that his end of year report for yr1 had errors in the way he was graded. We have been given new grades and these relate to where DS is at the beginning of this term. He is 1b for maths, 1c for reading and worringly P7 for writing. His intial scores were higher so we werent too worried but now are told that he hadnt actually achieved those levels and the new scores are correct. I am concerned that he is at P7 for writing as by my understanding he is expected to achieve levl 2b by the end of Key Stage 1.
I am also confused as 82/117 at the end of reception seemed fine to me, and then to be at P7 at the end of yr1 suggests that he made little or no progress through that year. Can anyone exlain the scores to me? Does it look like he didnt progress in yr1? Where would 82/117 sit on the P scale?

Anyone? If a child had attained 82/117 at the end of reception and then was at P7 at the start of Y2 what would you think about their progress in Y1??

The 82/117 is the overall score they get from the Foundation Stage profile. They get a maximum score of 9 for each area, with a typical score of about 6. They added up your ds' scores to get the 82 points.

The P scale is what they use if a child hasn't yet reached Level 1 for that area. It's a way of breaking down the score so that they can see what progress is made, eg if you are just told that your child hasn't yet reached level 1 then it's difficult to measure progress, but if you use P-scales you can see that a child has progressed within that area if they were originally at a lower P score.
This document might help. If you scroll through to the section on writing it will show you what P7 means for writing.

I would ask to speak to the teacher about this. They should be letting you know what is being done to help your ds with his writing.

I understand how they got to the score but what I am worried about is whether he actually made any progress in Yr 1. Can you place what 82/117 is on a scale. I cant see how he has progressed through yr1 otherwise.
I am going to speak to them, I just wanted to get a better understanding of where he is and what has happened so far before I talk to them.

The 82/117 takes into account several different areas, I think it might be 13? So it's possible to get a 9 in one area and a 3, say in another. So what you need to find out is what he got for writing, or whatever the equivalent is (pen control or something maybe) and see how that compares to now. Don't worry too much, I'm sure there's lots of exercises that you can do to bring up his pencil control.
