September v January intake for reception

My middle son is born in May and as our school operates a 2 intake process is due to go into reception in Janury 2010. For a number of reasons (namely the very soft focus of our school in the early years and the fact that he has an older sibling and is pretty mature) we want him to enter reception in September 2009. I have spoken to my LEA who say this is at the discretion of the headteacher. Any tips or recommendations of where to look to bolster my case before I present it to the Head?

Would be unusual for you to be able to change, it normally goes strictly by age.I presume the school would only get funding from the LEA from Christmas and if they let your son start early they would have to let others. Sorry.

Our LEA (we're in Cheshire) leaves it up to the parent to defer the place until January otherwise they just automatically go in in September.
My DS was 4 in May and started school this September. We considered leaving it until January but were talked out of it by virtually everyone we mentioned it to as it was generally considered it was just best for them to go in with all the other children and get on with it!
His class has the full 30 so presumably no-one will be joining them in January. One of the children was only 4 at the very end of August.
