Help - Yr 2 teachers - PLEASE

In an ideal world, what would you do with a child who has reached (exceeded) the SATS milestones already for yr 2 ?
(if extend sideways - how ?) Assume that there is at least one other in class in the same position.

And what is level 6 in literacy - make any sense to anyone ?

Is there a definative guide to phonograms as taught in Uk primary schools ?

Sorry I have not provided the usual bumpf of the pfb mother, but will do so if requested (it's just that the bitter and twisted angle might emerge if I do at this stage).

I have a dd in year 2 and her results following assessments at the end of yr1 exceeded the yr2 sats milestones. I'm fairly sure she isn't the only one in the class and I'm confident that she's being stretched, so have not problems. What is it that you want to know?

ingles2 - ds is just 6 and yr 2. Whole story might involve a rant at present, and I would rather have contructive advice than tea and sympathy

Level 6 is beyond the level tested at the end of KS2...11 years old. I believe that level 6 is the 'average' level achieved at the end of KS3...age 14. This cannot be what you mean!?

Perhaps you are thinking of stage 6 letters and sounds?

so how do you know she has exceeded the SATs levels for end of yr 2?
Level 6 is ORT sounds about average for beginning of yr 2. they are normally about 9 at end.
Are you happy generally with the school? What makes you think your dd is not being stretched? is she getting appropriate reading and homework?

It's the final stage of the new(ish) phonics scheme. If you google letters and sounds you should find full info.

Well to be honest Indignatio the school haven't made a huge deal about it, however there are lots of children in the school who are g&t. Dd2 hasn't been identified as g&t by the way, but what I'm saying is that fortunately for us the school is very used to high achieving children. We have parents evening next week, so I'll be hearing in more detail what the plans are.

I think you should rant by the way .

A school should only have the top 5-10% of any year group listed as G&T

Ingles2, yr1 teacher wrote a report stating that ds was level 3 for maths and reading/writing (numeracy and literacy sorry).

I've been googling (is that a word?) re letters and sounds and failed to come up with a definitive list/anything I could understand.

Cat - thanks for the permission, I just think that the sound advice I will receive on MN would be somewhat diluted by advice on how to (or not to) approach ds's teacher.

It sounds like he should have an IEP, I think I'd be asking for one with level 3 results (my dd's where 2A's). Have you had parents evening with the yr2 teacher yet?

Ds1 who's in Yr2 exceeded all the Yr2 levels by the end of Yr1 so they're simply doing Yr3 work with him now where appropriate. There are another couple of children doing the same.

ok my ds1 was the same, and has just started yr 4 with 4A's.
So what's the problem? Is your ds enjoying school? doing work he likes? making friends? is he as socially mature?

Cat - parents' eve teeters on the edge of the beginning of the rant - I'm trying to keep it objective at present.

LIZS - 3 achieved on the basis of sats papers completed at the end of yr 1

A child on level 3 for literacy would be a free reader, surely, and not needing letters and sounds and so on? Wouldn't they just need books to read? Or am I missing something?

My ds was at level 3 for literacy in year 1, and he just read tons!

STage 6 is the final stage...so all phonemes learnt...including ones like 'air, ere, ear' etc. Also word endings covered (I think)

Weblette - interesting, how does it work ? Is a problem forseen at yr 6 when your ds has to repeat the work he already covered in yr 5

Ingles2 - yes to 1 and 3, not really to 4 and with regard to 2, he tells me he switches off his brain at school because he doesn't need it. (weeping in corner emoticon)

Seeker - ds reads for a minimum of 1 and a half hours per day. Half an hour of that is school reading, the rest is his choice, he just gobbles up books. The letters and sounds stuff is something he does (with another) in school, outside class with a dedicated teacher.

but is that what he actually scored then or based on that what he would get at end of year 2 ? Sorry you seem to imply the former but it doesn't necessarily read that way . This may be of interest (esp strands 5 and 6).
