A coin - cardboard circle, paint bronze, then ink in a bust in profile?

A mosaic - a ten cm square grid, colour tiles (tessalations) cut out and stick onto card.

HTH

Oh yikes! Good idea.
Friend has made a Centurion helmet

Dont' teachers realise we are on holiday and I still have spellings to do with 2 children, reading books and trying to fit a bit of having fun at the same time?! Argh!

Roman sandal? You'll need to find some leather-like fabric though

Mosaic out of paper would be the easiest I guess - you could cut up pics from magazines to get different colours.

Sword or shield out of card

Roman Hypocaust (underfloor heating)

3d model of a Roman Bath

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 24/10/2008 15:44

YOu could probably do a hypocaust in lego.

GentleGarotter · 24/10/2008 15:48

A bunch of grapes, small loaf of bread to signify a feast.

Gobbledigook · 24/10/2008 15:56

What in gawd's name is a hypocaust?!

Gobbledigook · 24/10/2008 15:57

oh underfloor heating - how do you make that?!

I'm thinking shield is the easiest!!

Dragonbutter · 24/10/2008 15:57

i vote for mosaic, but i would.

lilolilmanchester · 24/10/2008 16:03

ha ha, we've done this twice. DS made a Roman Helmet, DD made a model of Roman Baths. Mosaic or shield would get my vote tho.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 24/10/2008 16:04

What about a spongia - get a sea sponge, put it on a stick and get him to ask the class what he thinks the romans used it for....

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 24/10/2008 16:06

LadyGlencora. Hypocaust - bit of big flat lego, with some 'pillars' made up of little ones, another big flat bit on top for the floor?

TwoFoggyToSee · 24/10/2008 19:34

What about a roof tile with a cats paw print in it, loads of those around. You will need clay and a cat and some really good gloves.

Gobbledigook · 25/10/2008 09:20

ROFL Twofoggy!

We've gone for the shield. Dh had loads of cardboard at work, we have red and yellow paint and we found a simple design for him to copy.

Lilo - I know, and I know I've got to do it twice more in years to come! Argh!

It's like the fecking Easter Bonnets!!!

lilolilmanchester · 25/10/2008 15:43

GDG - oh yes, forgot you had to do it twice more! Take a good look at what the rest of the year has done and write down the ideas for your next two!

Northumberlandlass · 25/10/2008 16:57

Get a stick, tie a natural sponge to the end with some string. It's how they used to wipe their arses
x

madlentileater · 25/10/2008 17:00

go to a health food shop andbuy some spelt- it's the variety of wheat used by romans- and make roman bread (there was a recipe on the pack I got, but basically use fresh yeast, honey and olive oil)
tho the sponge on a stick is v good idea!

TwoFoggy · 25/10/2008 19:04

can beat a shield, unless its Excaliber I suppose!

Love the bread and sponge ideas, I will store these for future years. I am dredding the Easter Bonnet palava but quite looking forward to the historical stuff!

Gobbledigook · 26/10/2008 11:40

i love the sponge idea and will do that next time - have done shield now though
thanks everyone!

DH and DS recently made a Roman shield together as DS had to dress as a Roman for the day at school.
Used 2 large pieces of card cut from a packing box, stapled together for strength. Spray painted the shield gold and then cut shapes from the remaining packing box and spary painted them silver before attaching them to the main shield. Then used some jewel type craft things to decorate it with too. It looked really good.
